“Only if on a tight budget”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2014

the Karasuma Matsubara bus stop (buses 5, 26).
Room size is ok, and with some amenities, but of cheap quality.
Wifi in each room, but the connection is very slow and not reliable.
Staff speaks English without any problem; we arrived early, and we were allowed to leave our bags in the lobby.
Breakfast is included, but is of mediocre quality (at best); more, it's difficult to find a place to eat during peak hours.
There is only one elevator serving all 13 floors; it's indeed fast, but during peak hours it takes a long time to reach your room, as it stops frequently.
There are some fast food restaurants around the area, but nothing remarkable.
Convenient only if you are on a tight budget

Good:
Coin laundry. Great for long stays, can pack lesser clothes
Ice dispenser free for guest use
Drinks vending machines at lobby
Hotel offer Eco plan - great for travellers who loves eco friendly and there's discount as bonus too
Reasonably priced considering Gojo station is not far from city area.
Key has to be placed at reception when u go out. It's quite ok as the key is quite bulky to bring out and they are fast to attend to you
Overall, the hotel and rooms are dated but they are clean
Bad:
You have to carry your luggages up the stairs from the Gojo station. U can look for the elevator at another exit but u will have to drag and navigate longer route on your first arrival.
Location may not be fantastic but it's just 6 mins slow walk from Gojo station exit 6.
Super small room and the theres no view as the window view is actually someone's house in the next building. Have to keep the curtains closed if u dun want to feel the next door can peek through.
Toilet - it can't get any smaller and you have to lift your leg over the high step to enter the toilet.

Might consider to stay again if there's no other cheaper options with the same conditions

It is true that having just one elevator becomes a problem during the morning rush hours especially if your room is on the lower non-smoking floors. We were booked in a non-smoking room but luckily were given the top, 13th, floor room so the lift was not an issue for us. However, if you are sensitive to smoke like us, be warned that the smoking floors are from around the 7th to 12th floors, so we were literally sitting atop a smoke "stack" and sometimes did smell smoke seeping into our room : ( Location is ok but not as good as that for the TI at Shijo Karasuma. For the latter and also this hotel, the most convenient way to get to/from Osaka is to use the Hankyu line between Hankyu Karasuma and Hankyu Umeda stations.

I stayed one night during the maple season last December. The check-in time was strictly 4pm, and check-out time was strictly 10am, need to pay extra and notify them prior. No excuses.
I arrived the hotel around 2:30pm, even the room was ready we couldn't check-in. So we left our luggage at the lobby, checked in late that night around 11pm.
The room was nice and small, with everything you need in it. Even during this hot season, the price was still reasonable. There were buses and subway station not far from the hotel. Took a nice slow walk to Kyoto Station took about 15 mins, not too far. Another slow walk you could do some shopping at kawahara-machi (OPA or daimaru, etc.)
It's not close to anywhere, but not so far from everywhere. Might consider stay there next time!

Room Tip: Check-in and check-out time are not flexible! Need to pay extra if you check-out late! No bother...

We spent 4 nights in this hotel, which is at 30 minutes walking distance from both the famous Gion area and the Kyoto JR station (which is a reference point not only for trains, but also for: tourist information, currency exchange, buses that go about anywhere in town, places where to buy good food, for instance the Andersen bread etc.). So, we have been happy about the hotel location; and the staff was helpful as well, which is common in Japanese hotels. Then...they offered breakfast, which is not common in pre-booked hotels; but: 1- the breakfast table included very little for Western taste, mainly only apple juice, toasts and one kind of jam; and 2-something was always missing: either there was no more tea or coffee or jam, or one of the two toasters was malfunctioning... Of course it's a problem to have one toaster only, when many guests have breakfast at the same time. So we mainly had Japanese-style food; which we like, but not for breakfast!
For the rest: the hotel rooms are clean but very small, which is common in Japan; the Wi-fi connection is in theory available but in practice it did not work; luckily our PC supports the cable connection, which worked well.
On the positive side, the price was reasonable

Unfortunately, I could not get a weekend reservation because this hotel is very popular. So I had to break up my trip. If you are a Toyoko Inn member, you can reserve up to 6 months ahead, 3 months ahead if you're not. See their website. This staff speaks English well, was nice to tell me that I had enough points to earn a free night, explained that I didn't have to renew my Toyoko membership because once you join it's forever. The breakfast room was full, but if you wait a minute, someone leaves. Breakfast consisted of sausages and various rice and pickle dishes. No eggs. I did my laundry one afternoon in the hotel, no problems. The only disappointment I had was that the taxi driver took me to the wrong Toyoko Inn when I first arrived. Even after I showed him a map. My Kyoto friend told me that many taxi drivers are now retired military who do not know the area. If you're not tired, and not intimidated by the ant hill that is Kyoto station, ask around for the subway line and take the Karasuma subway one stop to Gojo. I believe you get out at exit 2. MacDonald's is on your right, (across the street), and you are at Lawsons. The big street in between is Karasuma. Walk about 10 mins and the hotel is on the left. Look for the white sign (like a banner) with blue Japanese lettering and the dining area in the front. If you hit Circle K, you've passed it. If you hit Shijo station, you've really passed it. If you get lost, just remember you are on Karasuma street between Gojo and Shijo stations.

Gojo is located one train stop from Kyoto station, and a short ten minutes walk to Shijo station where you can connect to Osaka with the Hankyu trains. A short half hour stroll will bring you to the lively shopping area of Teramachi Arcade and Gion. It was also near a pick up point for Japan Sunrise tours which we joined for a one day tour of Nara and Kyoto. Nearby was a nice little restaurant (located on the first floor) which served great shabu-shabu.- we ended going there twice.

Room was very clean as is the case with all the other Toyoko Inns we stayed in. Bed and pillows were comfortable and we slept very well. The staff had a fairly good command of English and helpful with maps and directions. We could leave our luggage at the hotel before check in and after check out.

Rate was very reasonable, and included Japanese style breakfast which I wasn't crazy about but was happy to settle for the 2 types of western style breads and coffee.

Most appreciated was the free wifi in the room.
