We booked a 12,000 yen (each person) class to learn how to make Obanzai (Japanese home recipe) and have to say it's one of the best experiences we've had in Kyoto.
The tour guide (along with taxi service) picked us up at hotel and explained about Kyoto when we are on our way to a typical Japanese home (real family). A Japanese housewife then greeted us warmly and treated us a cup of tea before dressing us in aprons and taking us to the kitchen. There, we learned about all the secret Japanese home recipe of how to prepare for an authentic Obanzai and were able to enjoy the delicious cuisine we made together. We were then escorted back to hotel via taxi service again.
Although you can spend much less if you could speak Japanese and join other cooking class that's offered via some Japanese magazine, the personal experience we got and the English support was worth the price (I speak intermediate Japanese). Wak Japan also offers other classes (e.g. Flower arrangement, tea ceremony, etc.) and their speed of service is amazing (even for last minute booking such as two days in advance)!
