I booked this place months ago before we went there but when we checked in the manager obviously forgot about us. We have booked the most expensive dinner but ended up getting the lowest price one. Food-wise, some courses at the dinner were outstanding but some were just very average. The dishware was very nice (best so far i have ever seen in Japan) but food quality was inconsistent. Breakfast were just ok only the egg was so unforgettable.
The ryokan is very small with basically no amenities except the bath downstairs. Considering 10% service charge (rare in Japan or you get to be super good to charge this), I don't think the customer service was that great. Prime example: we didn't get a dinner course list and we were so confused how many course we would have during the dinner and when we were supposed to leave the dinning room.
Typical 1 night stay (cheapest room) + dinner + breakfast + tax & tips costed us over $80,000 yen. I feel the overall experience should not be more than 40 compared with typical ryokans in Japan. Maybe Kyoto is more expensive but this is way too much. Save your time and money for visiting shrines and other Kyoto experience IMHO.
Btw, I believe this place lost the Michelin stars rating in 2013.
