“Amazing Hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2009

Sawaya Honten is an amazing ryokan in Kyoto that provides a true Japanese experience. I stayed there for four nights with my girlfriend and enjoyed every minute of it.

They do provide breakfast in the room but the stay is cheaper without it (only got it or one morning). The rooms are large so they keep the futons available and also have a HD tv and western style bathroom if you prefer (with shower). You do have to take off your shoes at the front and no wireless internet (but they do have a computer in the front that you can use).

The owner does speak English so no problems there and the other employees use electronic dictionaries so they try their best to accommodate foreign travelers.

It is in close proximity to the Silver Pavilion, the Zoo, and numerous temples. The hotel is located a little North and East of the city center but is only a block and a half from a bus stop and subway station (I recommend only using the buses since they are easier and cheaper).

Also one of the few hotel with availability during the Gion Festival.

Will definitely stay there again next time I am in town.

We stayed at this ryokan recently and were quietly surprised at how good it was. The owner speaks enough english to help you get around and it was about 20 mins from JR Kyoto station on the 206 bus. The rooms were a reasonable size for Japan and it has air con. if needed, It only has the japanese bathes but I didn't mind them. It was very clean and serviced daily and was a great experience to sleep on the floor/futon. It is situated in the easten district 10 mins walk from the night spot of Gion of which the 206 passes past the main street when you want to come home. it was between 880 and 1210 yen for us to catch a taxi to the main shopping district. Just ask for the "Daimaru"

We stayed here for 4 nights in room 302 (on the first floor, looking over the small garden).

The room was large (10 mat) with plenty of space to store cases and leave the room looking like it should. Although not an en-suite room it did have a small adjoining room with a sink which was a bonus.

However the problem was that the service wasn't what we'd hoped for from a ryokan. Hard to put your finger on the problem as they weren't ever rude, you just weren't made to feel at home. Perhaps it was the language barrier (only 1 of us spoke Japanese) but we did have better service at other places.0 minutes from the main shopping/geisha district and a 1,800Y taxi rid

We had nothing to complain about at all but left without feeling this was quite worth the money.

Location wise, it's hard to pick the "perfect" location in Kyoto, this was 3 minutes from the nearest tube, 15-2e from the station with plenty of shrines a decent but reasonable walk away.
