“A warm welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

Riding the escalator in a wheelchair was our welcome to the Hotel Granvia. Who knew this was even possible? Our family member who is in a wheelchair at the age of 18 had her first ride on one. Staff were delightful and warm, no question was too silly to answer. Great location with lots of shopping, great restaurants and easy access. The rooms were lovely and spacious, although the bathroom was a bit smaller than we are accustomed but definitely workable. Breakfast in the restaurant was lovely, with a variety of options for all. Great place

There was nothing particularly wrong with the Hotel Granvia, but there just wasn't anything that particularly stuck out.

The staff was all very nice and accommodating. The rooms were clean and quite spacious. And it being connected to train station/shopping mall there are numerous restaurants to within walking distance. That said, the main train station isn't exactly the center of Kyoto's restaurant/nightlife scene, which meant we had to take a handful of cabs to and from dinner.

That said it's a big hotel...in a train station, so it loses a little bit of the charm I think one would hope for when picking a hotel in Kyoto.

If I were to return to Kyoto, I would probably try to find something a bit smaller with a bit more character.

Stayed here for 3 nights and been coming back here over the last 10 years. Overall the hotel still looks fabulous though some parts of the room carpet starts to show its age. The room is very spacious and the location is perfect as well as convenient if you are traveling with small children or elderly folks. Kyoto is a walking city but most destinations can be reached by taxi starting from 640y to 2140yen to the golden temple. If you have a family or group of 5 small adults, take a taxi as subway ticket cost 210y per person one way. Please ask hotel concierge to write the destinations in japanese and show it to the taxi driver as English is not spoken. We had a room facing the train station, noise was minimal but if you extremely light sleeper suggest requesting for rooms facing Kyoto Tower. Did not take breakfast at hotel as there are cafe at the hotel basement that opens from 7am. Will definitely stay here again. Excellent service from the bell hop, concierge, reception and everyone.

Very good location to get around either via public city bus or underground train. The Japanese resto are very good but for breakfast it's always full you need to get up early if you don't want to miss the breakfast

Room Tip: Get up early for breakfast terrible line

Fantastic view from the room overlooking Kyoto. Clean, spacious rooms and large bed. When we read that the hotel was over the train station we had our reservations...but forget about the trains you can't hear them and you are smack bang in the middle of everything. The hotel and train station appears to be the most modern buildings in Kyoto. So it's nice to see all the cultural sights but come back to a modern hotel. Doing day trips to Nara, Osaka is so easy when you are just an elevator ride from the trains. Def recommend. Stay in a ryokan in Hakone, in Kyoto enjoy the comfort of a international hotel.

It's very hard to fault this hotel. The staff were polite and helpful. Our room was well fitted out, comfortable and modern. We enjoyed the Sky Lounge for both a drink and food. The other bar is nice too. In fact the whole hotel is really beautiful.

If you are staying in Kyoto, its attractions are so spread out that staying near the station is as good as any; although nightlife in the area is limited and 'downtown' would be a better choice if you are interested in that.

However not sure I would here again it was all too impersonal. Sure everything runs perfectly but I did feel like a battery chicken in a five star chicken factory.

My wife & I stayed in Room 1007 from Sep 29 to Oct 6 2013 & enjoyed it immensely. It was our second stay at the Hotel in the past 12 months & we would return again given the opportunity. The King Bed room was relatively spacious by Japanese hotel standards & was tastefully decorated in brown/beige tones with dark timber fittings. The bed mattress/pillow/doona combination was very comfortable & positioned out of direct line of the room air-conditioner.

There was sufficient wardrobe hanging space & the safe was adequate for our needs. The large window provided great views of the Kyoto Tower & across the northern suburbs to the hills beyond. 2 small armchairs & a table were positioned near the window & we often used them just to sit & relax while enjoying the view. The bathroom was not large & the shower was over the bath, which isn't our preferred arrangement but seems common in Japan. There was a good range of toiletries & a comfortable bidet seat toilet.

The room came with free wi-fi although we had problems connecting 2 Tablets, A telephone call brought 2 staff members to the room 5 minutes later with additional equipment, which not only overcame our problem but provided us with a faster connection for the length of our stay. In all respects, each of the staff members we encountered was efficient, courteous & helpful; special thanks to the Concierge staff member who assisted us with our Shinkansen tickets.

As other travellers have mentioned, the hotel's location is remarkable in terms of rail, bus & taxi transport as well as shopping & dining.

Room Tip: Our northside room was quieter than the southside one we stayed in last year
