We stayed at Hotel Granvia for 5 nights in March 2013. We were given standard rooms facing the tracks. It had a nice view of the surrounding area. We did hear a bit of train noise, mostly the jingles. We had a room with two single beds. It was spacious, nicely furnished and a very large bathroom (tub and shower area). They provide plush slippers for you to use or take home. We went to the restaurant for breakfast buffet. It was really great. Lots of different stations with Japanese food (miso soup, tofu, pickled vegetables, seaweed salad) and western food (scrambled eggs, French toast, sausages), along with many juices, health shakes and coffee/tea. The restaurant got a bit crowded as the morning went out.
The best part about the hotel is its location. The Kyoto train station is full of restaurants, convenience stores and shops, but is also connected to a few "malls" with more restaurants and shopping. I went shopping a few evenings, but never did see everything. Shopping malls include Portia, the Cube. From the station, you can take the subway (not covered by JR pass) or hail a taxi to visit other parts of Kyoto. It was very convenient.
