“Good down to the details”

Advantage of location and access to trains is obvious. Other pluses for this hotel: spacious, king size beds available, quiet rooms, view of city from many rooms, pleasant staff has a good command of English, helpful concierge, plenty of food and beverage options -- and, drum-roll... a dimmer switch in the bathroom. Finally, a hotel gets it! No blazing my pupils in the can at 4 am. A little touch like that eases the travel and jet lag. I suppose the only downside, common to much of Kyoto, is that the restaurants and bars tend to close early. One needs to be adventurous to search out a neighborhood izakaya that serves late.

My wife and I stayed here in September 2012 for 3 nights on our second visit to Kyoto (we previously stayed at a Ryokan about 20 minutes walk from Kyoto Station).

Our booking was made directly with the hotel, and rate we got was approximately AUD170pn at the time when the 1AUD:87YEN, which was excellent! It was fantastic value for the calibre of hotel.

Customer service was superb - upon checking in, two staff escorted us to our room to explain to us everything we needed to know. We felt extremely welcome and everything was professional to a tee, without being pretentious.

The size of the room was very clean and decent for Japanese standards. The decor was modern (the hotel itself appears very new) and included more than enough space to accommodate our two large suitcases, as well as a coffee table and two armchairs by the window, which had a view of Kyoto Station and Kyoto Tower.

The Hotel Granvia, like many business hotels, has a number of restaurants. However, they were quite high priced so we gave them a miss and frequented many of the restaurants in the Kyoto Station complex instead.

In terms of location - we booked this hotel precisely for location!! Last time in Kyoto, we needed to lug our luggage 20 minutes through sweltering summer heat to our Ryokan (which was very nice), in the little streets north of the station. This time, we hopped off the Shinkansen, walked a few steps and voila - you were at the hotel. There are several shopping malls and restaurant strips within the complex (Cube, Porta, Isetan etc) which made eating out extremely easy.

The Kyoto Station itself is a piece of architectural genius - spanning some 15 storeys open plan, we spent hours on our last visit and on this visit exploring the various shops and restaurants here. Having the Hotel Granvia at our doorstep made it extremely convenient.

Checkout was an extremely smooth process. As we were running late for our Shinkansen back to Tokyo, the staff went out of their way to process our checkout as quickly as possible - in time for us to just make it!

If I could get the same fantastic rate as we got this time round, we wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Hotel Granvia again.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side have a view of Kyoto Station, and depending on the level, a view of Kyoto To...

We chose this hotel due to location and trip advisor reviews. It was a great place to be based for our recent trip to Kyoto and the numerous day trips we went on.
It literally is within the station complex, however dont let that put you off! We didnt hear any train noise when we were there.
Plus points
Location is perfect for going around kyoto and further afield
Size of rooms
friendly staff
If you get a North facing room, then you have a fab view over Kyoto

Negative points
Walls between rooms were a little thin, so our last night when we had noisy neighbours wasnt ideal. However they did go to sleep early!
You had to pay to use the pool ???
Overal the plus points outweighed the negative points and I would certainly stay there again, should I happen to be in Kyoto

Over the past 5 years we have stayed at the Granvia 4 times for 5 or 6 nights each time. For 3 of these trips I had 2 rooms. The price range I paid was a low $168 USD (last trip September 2012) to a high of $320. I typically book the least costly rooms however I believe we got better rooms for a few of our stays. The less expensive rooms were not much smaller except for the baths. In every case the rooms were large enough, maybe 300 square feet and were always very clean. We got free tea and a bottle of water each day. However coffee is an item that has a charge.

We especially like this hotel because of the easily accessible transportation within Kyoto and to cities like Osaka, Nara, Himeji and even Hiroshima. One hotel resource that is outstanding is the concierge staff. They are exceptional! The hotel is fairly large but I never had to wait to get access to a staff member. On my last trip I mentioned I was leaving for Tokyo by train so would be sending my luggage via the shipping company located in the lobby. When my wife and I brought our luggage down from the room the paperwork was waiting for us. On check in to our Tokyo hotel I discovered that the Granvia had called ahead to let them know of my expected arrival time and that we would be receiving our luggage the next day. Although I was not concerned about delivery it was reassuring that both hotels were tracking our luggage.

There is a department store connected to Kyoto station with many restaurants and a market deli that most department stores have. In fact we enjoy looking at the deli foods and usually purchase some for snacks or meals to be taken in our room. There also is a large underground shopping mall with many stores and restaurants also connected to the station.

If this is your first trip to Kyoto do some advance planning. There are so many must see sites that no matter how many days you plan to stay... it may not be enough.

Room Tip: If you enjoy city lights ask for a room facing Kyoto Tower.

Probably the most convenient hotel for anyone traveling on the rail passes. With it being literally part of the train station (but without the noise) getting to and then traveling round kyoto could not be easier. The hotel is really beautiful, and peaceful...which is amazing considering where its located. The staff (including all cleaning staff we met) were super friendly and helpful (they organized to have our bags sent on to our next hotel with no fuss at all)

We had a room overlooking the actual train tracks on about the 12 th floor. The view was actually amazing...a being able to see a distant castle and temple, and the people watching in the station was great. The room was very spacious, quiet and with a lovely bathroom. The tea/coffee was not complimentary though.

The facilities around the hotel are amazing....restaurants, diners, take away, shopping, trains, buses etc you couldn't ask for more. We have stayed in kyoto 3 times now, the previous 2 being at a hotel over the road from the station and can honestly say this is the only hotel we would now stay at in kyoto.

From the excellent location to the rooms and services cannot fault this hotel. If you are looking for a good base to explore that has all the luxury you need do not go past this hotel. From the moment we checked in to the day we left all of our experiences were positive ones.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a city view you will not be disappointed.

This hotel is in an excellent location at Kyoto railway station. Not only is it close to the trains (obviously) but it is also close to the bus stops for most of Kyoto.

Everything about this hotel is big and impressive. There are so many rooms, that it was a long walk to our room along several corridors. There are numerous restaurants and cafes in the complex catering for every taste.

The service was amazingly good. We'd been told that you don't tip in Japan but the service was so good that I couldn't help myself - only to have the money rejected with a polite smile.

The building itself is also very impressive - stunning modern architecture.

We had problems with the air conditioning being too hot on the first night. They sent several people to look at the problem but they told us that they couldn't solve it because the outside temperature was so hot. The next morning, we noticed people on the roof who seemed to be repairing the air conditioning units. For the remaining nights, the air conditioning was fine.

There was a very good restaurant near reception that we went to most days for breakfast and dinner. They offer either a buffet or menu selection but the buffet was a great choice - lots of options and good food.

Our room was spacious and luxurious with a large ensuite bathroom. Internet reception in our room was very good. There was a great view of the city with Kyoto Tower in the foreground.

This was a great place to stay.
