My husband and I stayed at the Granvia for one night. What a fanastic location! This hotel is located within the Kyoto JR station premises so it's perfect for a short stay and early getaway. A 5 to 10 minute taxi drive gets you into the entertainment district (1050 yen) and, given the hotel's location at the station, there are always plenty of taxis available.
The check-in staff were efficient and spoke good English. The twin bed configuration seems to be the standard for Japanese hotels but the staff were more than happy to locate a room with a Queen size bed for us. We did not have a good view (room 1019) but our travelling companions had a great view of the Kyoto Tower (room 1106). This is also a very large hotel - our room was about a 50m walk to the elevator!
Having travelled to Japan a couple of times before, I can say that the room size was larger than average and on par with that of hotels in Western countries. The room was clean and well furnished although some of the furniture looked as if it had seen better days. The bed and bedding were very comfortable. The bathroom was of a good size and stocked with a basket of handy toiletries. There was also complimentary internet access for guests with their own computers.
We did not have meals included with our room and did not eat at any of the restaurants. We did, however, use the gymnasium (1050 yen per visit). It was a small gym with a few exercise machines, free weights and 2 treadmills. Perfect for our needs. There was also a small lap pool and spa.
Overall, this was a good hotel and its location puts it above average.
