We had only 1 nite at Yuzuya Isshinkyo ryokan. We wish we cld stay longer but it was fully booked. So do book well in advance esp since end nov is the season to see the autumn leaves!!
The entrance is right next to the Yasaka shrine, off the main road of Higashioji St. It is a very discreet entrance, as you do not see Yuzuka name anywhere, but it is right next to the golf shop. We initially thought that it was only a restaurant as there was a signboard showing the dinner menu and the name of the ryokan is actually written in japanese. So we went up the long stone stairway and arrived at a beautiful reception smelling of yuzu and cooking depending on what time you arrive. There is public bath and also private bath and toilet. The room is the right size and beautifully decorated and traditional. We love it that we have our own bath and toilet in our room. We also requested for a quiet room which faces the back and we did not hear nor see the other guests as the rooms are all very well placed. Well, I also love the toiletries the room came with. The ginger soap was amazing.
Meals are taken at the restaurant next to the reception. We paid 72,000 (900usd) for the room, with breakfast and traditional kaiseki dinner for two. The traditional japanese dinner was elaborate, typical in this region, lasted almost 3 hours but it was truly delicious. We ate so much. Rice is traditionally served towards the end of the dinner, and ours was rice cooked in the fish soup served earlier with a whole yuzu cooked in it, I enjoyed that alot. As for breakfast, you can choose between Japanese or western, both were excellent. Best of all, they had proper coffee besides green tea. I wld say it is so much better than the other ryokan we have stayed at earlier. The staffs are all excellent and spoke better english than most ryokans.
The location is truly perfect. 15 minutes away from the Kyoto Train station by taxi (1200 yen), you are in the central district of Gion. You are right next to the Yasaka Shrine, 10 minutes walk to the Kodaji nite temple, stone throw away from the geisha district and rows of shops selling traditional japanese snacks and delicacies...micheline star restaurants Chihana is 5 mins away. Fish market and shopping district is all along road straight down. You can't get lost.
All in all, we wld stay there again though the price is indeed prohibitive...find us another ryokan that is as good, that costs less and is as well located.
