“Good hotel, but seriously expensive with extra charges”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2012

This was a fairly good hotel for attending a business conference with everything you would expect. Service is good, food is good and all facilities are good, although the hotel does lack atmosphere and is big and impersonal. However, beware of seriously high charges. The gym / swimming pool was over 2000 yen and was not free for guests. The coffee shop in the lobby was 600 yen for coffee and a cake, but that was only if you ordered normal coffee - if you order a cappucino and a cake, it's not part of their "special deal" and they charge you 1,500 yen! Rip off!
Overall, it was fine for business, but I wouldn't choose to go back.

The hotel itself is near perfect. Breakfast at the rooftop restaurant is a great way to start a surely jetlaged business day! I liked the gym and fitness facilities too, but a bit pricey for that. I asked and got a special deal on AM rates (Free before noon). And they open early (7am) for Japan!

Only negative - the location is not the best. You are far removed from beautiful mountain nestled Kobe and the vibrant downtown scene there.

but all in all - it's a great hotel and if you need to be in this area, you will be ok with it!

It was a pleasure to stay at the Portopia Hotel in Kobe. Staff was very friendly, food was great. the rooms are very nice and very very very clean and the beds are realy comfortable. I also went to the spa, swimming pool and fitness centre. It was very nic, but rather expensive...

The hotel was located in a real business area, so if you are looking for a tourist hotel, it is possible that you will be disappointed if you choose the Portopia.

Stayed one night at this hotel for a business trip, and as Japanese hotels go, the rooms are huge.
The room was clean, good view etc faultless.
Staff were excellent, good English.
The biggest shock was the price, very low for what you get.
Would recommend to anyone.
If the hotel asked me, I don't think I could make any suggestions for improvement to them.
Well done to Hotel Portopia.

This is a large and proper four-star quality property, and while not in the center of town, the hotel is about 10 minutes ride from Kobe airport on the monorail. Free wifi in all rooms. Nice lobby cafe and restaurants suitable for business meetings. I was not pleased however to learn that the spa/sauna is not open until late, so business travelers wanting to lie back after a full day of meetings cannot use it.

The hotel is OK, but a bit far away. If you stay there, do not miss view from top floor bar/restaurant. As for staying here - fine for conference or wedding, not good if you wish to enjoy dinner in town.

This is the fourth time I've been to Japan for a medical conference and this is the largest hotel I've stayed in. The rooms and bathrooms are normal-sized by western standards but fairly large for a Japanese Hotel, just for that it gets a "very good" rating for me.

The hotel is not very new, it has the smell and feel of a fairly aged hotel. But just like the rest of Japan, everything was quite clean.

The food is very good. The interesting thing with the breakfast buffet is that you're given a choice of where to have breakfast. We had breakfast on the 2nd floor restaurant on the first day and on the 30th floor restaurant on the second day. The 30th floor had the better view with fewer food choices and the 2nd floor had no view, with a wider selection of food.

The staff in the hotel (just like most Japanese) were very polite and helpful.

I would agree with the other reviews which state that its an ideal hotel if you have a meeting to attend at the near by convention center (less than 5 min walk). But it does take some effort to get to downtown Kobe. There is however a free shuttle going to and fro the Port Island and the downtown area.

The drawback of this hotel is that use of the gym and the in-door pool is not included in the hotel room fee and the fee for use of these facilities were quite exorbitant for the average Filipino travel (me). I didn't even think of using the outdoor pool since it was only around 15 degrees centigrade at noon time.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay.
