4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012 via mobile

Located at walking distance from Peace park, hotel has a stylish lobby. Rooms are very small, Japanese standard, but with all amenities and, at upper floors, a fantastic view on the city. Not far, also, from main restaurant and shopping area

This hotel is in a nice location in central Hiroshima and offers a good selection of facilities for guests. Enjoyed the pyjamas that come with the room and actually ended up buying some. Oh yes. Recommended.

The hotel is conviently located, most sights are within walking distance (train station, peace memorial park and A-dome, shopping arcades, restaurants).
As it is close to the train station it is also easy to take the train to Miyajimaguchi and from there the ferry to Miyajima (a good budget (free) option to the direct ferry if you have the JR Pass).
The hotel has a japansese and a french restaurant that I didn't try. There is also the New York Café which serves as a breakfast room in the morning and a bar/restaurant in the evening. The food in the Café was ok, but the language barrier was evidently there when trying to order.
I stayed in one of the cheapest rooms and can't say I was dissatisfied at all. The room was adequately sized (bathroom a bit small though), the bed was comfortable. There were no english-speaking TV channels as far as I found out, there were some cards to buy for "pre-paid TV", but I suspect those were for another kind of channels.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012

We travelled here with our 3 young children and had lots of fun.

They managed to squeeze the 5 of us in to a room (3 king single beds), as has been commented they are not huge rooms but they are clean and modern. We managed with the 5 of us and had great views from the 13th floor down to the local shrine which was having a major festival all weekend when we were there.

the lobby staff were fantastic, with good fast wi-fi in the foyer and a great little restaurant. Of note was the lunch buffet which we really enjoyed- the entree / desserts are buffet style and the main meal you order off the menu. We had fantastic curries. there were many desserts to chose from, and we had them all! The best was the divine creme brulee. We also had dinner here and while the food was exquisite, the portions were small, even by Japanese standards.

We walked easily with our small kids to the bomb museum, and enjoyed the location of this hotel on the French style boulevard. We did take taxis to and from Hiroshima station - at about 1000 yen each way, which was fine as we had all our luggage and little ones.

There is no self service laundry in the hotel, so I did mine in a laundromat around the corner, co located with a few "night clubs" and this was an interesting experience.

All in all, we liked this lovely, comfortable and well located hotel and would stay there again.

I have stayed in Japan in the past so I am well aware of the rooms running a bit smaller then I am used to. However, this was the smallest room I've ever stayed in. Ever. In addition to that, the bathroom was quite dated. I did not think this reflected what I saw and requested from the website. Aside from that, it is a short cab ride from Hiroshima Station and the hotel lobby is very nice. We did not stay in our room all day, we were there to explore and sight see.

I did not eat in the hotel restaurant, but we did sit at the bar. The drinks mixed drinks from the bar were quite good and the bartender meticulously makes your drink with care. You are allowed to smoke cigars (and they also sell them) in the bar as well.

I see some people complained about the area being far from the street cars. It is. If that bothers you, do not stay here. It did not bother us at all. We loved walking thru the shopping arcades to get to the street car. We did our research prior and packed comfortable shoes. We were able to walk to Peace Memorial Park (which was about a mile away).

Yes, this hotel is kinda by the dodgey areas at night but all those things do not bother me. It is by many Love Hotels, adult stores, and what looked like strip clubs but we never felt unsafe once walking by any of it. That being said, it is only at night that these streets really come alive. During the day you see children and people trying to get to work. It only become more racey at night. Which honestly, I loved because it was non-threatening and seemed perfectly safe. Many nights we walked thru this area to get back to our hotel and everyone was very friendly.

In the end, I am not sure I would stay here again. It is not because of the location, but because how small the rooms were.

Oriental Hotel
==============

I booked this hotel because it was a recognizable brand-name hotel that came up high on both Tripadvisor as well as Hotels.com

Summary: Not bad for the money but now that I know Hiroshima better, I would say that there are better hotels that I would put up at next time.

Pros
====
- Nice, trendy lobby.
- Nice view of Hiroshima from our room on the 19th floor.
- Small but utilitarian room and layout. Wife and I spent little time in our room, so it suffice for our needs/uses. The bathroom is one of those pre-fabricated, modular ones from Toto. Functional, but in terms of finishing (and size), definitely not what I would expect from a 5-star hotel.
- Hotel staff were very helpful. Most speaks "functional" English: gets the message across and the job done.
- Room had these pillows that had small pieces of a special vinyl tube in them. We were so impressed by the rest we got that we bought a couple of them from the nearby Sogo for ourselves.

Cons
====
- Biggest problem is with public transportation. The nearest streetcar station (Hiroshima's tram system) is 8-10 minutes' walk away. It is not a big deal in the morning but definitely a hassle after a full day of sightseeing.
- Oriental is located a block away from the "happening" part of town where all the restaurants/sights are. Not far but there are a number of hotels that are right in the midst of that "happening" stretch.
- A lot of girlie bars and love hotels in the surrounding area. We were amused to see that a few streets nearby were labelled as "a bit dodgy" on a free tourist map.
- Hotel has the smallest room in our entire Japan trip.

Tips
====
- If you arrive by train, take a cab to the hotel, which is a 5-10 min ride that costs about 1100 yen. It sure beats dragging luggage along the cobbled streets for close to 1 km from Hatchobori Streetcar stop (which will cost 150 yen per adult).

This hotel is a fantastic value for the price. While not fancy, the rooms are clean and comfortable, with nice views if you are lucky to get a room on a higher floor and the whole hotel has a nice feel to it. The location is great, close to the city centre, public transport and tourist attractions. The highlight for me was a lovely 'New York' style cafe/bar on the ground floor with live music (varying from jazz, soft piano, etc.) every night. This was a really nice place to unwind and relax after a long day of sightseeing! There is a Japanese restaurant on one of the higher floors as well, with really nice and affordable food, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend this hotel to people travelling with friends, adult family, or even solo!
