We then saw the cenotaph. We were looking for an ‘Aussie style’ one, but it was actually a curved dome-like one, which houses the names of those who were victims of the A-bomb. Every year, hibakusha (A-bomb survivors) who have died are added on 6 August, the anniversary of Hiroshima’s bombing. The whole area was architecturally designed so the cenotaph, the flame of peace (which will only be extinguished when there are no more atomic bombs in the world) and the A-Bomb Dome all line up. The inscription says, “Let all the souls here rest in peace; for we shall not repeat the evil”.
