“great value but excruciatingly small rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2009

Have almost finished my 4-night stay at Hotel Active, and have generally enjoyed it.
The hotel is well-located in the CBD and near a tram stop (kaneyama-machi); taxi drivers are also familiar with the hotel.
Loby is stylish, staff are polite and accommodating, and there is free internet in the business centre and also in the room if you bring your laptop. Complimentary breakfast is great but only served between 7-9am. As this hotel caters mostly to business travellers I guess that's fine, but I love to sleep in when on holiday so only have been able to partake once.
There is also a Japanese bath on the ground floor; separate bathing times for women and men. The water is contains theraputic calcium and other minerals. I really enjoyed this, very relaxing.
The only misgiving about this hotel that I have is the room size. I live in Japan and so am accustomed to making the most out of small spaces, but this could possibly be the smallest hotel room I have stayed in in Japan. If you plan to just sleep in your room, perhaps you won't mind this hotel. But if you plan to spend any decent time in the room, it may get to you. I had to repack my suitcase and nearly went nuts from the lack of space. If you need more space and have the budget, I recommend Hotel Sunroute near the Peace Park; it's one of the roomier non-five star hotels I've encountered in this region.
All in all, for 7,500yen a night ("double" room), it's good value, especially with the included breakfast (if you can surface in time). Just don't come here if you have space issues!

Had a lovely stay at this modern business hotel.Room altough small was stylishly decorated and the bathroom had a lovely corener bath. The hotel is located in a area with shops and close to the Hiroshima atomic bomb musuem and the atomic dome. The beds were comfortable and the buffet breakfast exetensive.I would happily stay again.

I booked 6 months in advance via direct email and the manager still had my booking (I had forgot to re-confirm). She also spoke flawless English which made life really easy. The rooms are nice and new and spotless and it's right on the tram line 5 minutes from the train station. We stayed 2 nights and had an excellent breakfast each day included. It's very much a business hotel with almost all male clients only but this place was a total score. Can't recommend it enough.

No extended trip to Japan would be complete without a visit to the wonderful city of Hiroshima - and if you are trying to balance your budget on hotels for the more expensive cities - you couldn't do better than stay at Hotel Active.

Location is perfect - an easy tram ride from the JR Station to the hotels doorstep. Then walking distance to all the sights of Hiroshima - A-Bomb Dome & Park, the nightlife & shopping districts, Hiroshima Castle & Museums, World Peace Cathedral etc.

The hotel was even more modern and stylish than I expected - excellent staff even providing ladies bag for my partner on arrival. Internet is free both in the lobby and in rooms (with your own laptop).

The rooms - yes they are small. I would probably not want to stay more than 3 or 4 nights (but then this is probably sufficient for a complete visit to the area). Nontheless they are very clean, modern & comfortable and I actually found the bed against the wall quite cosy ! The bathroom are the plastic modular variety but very clean & comfortable as well. The size is probably the main 'if' about the hotel but again for the price you cannot possibly argue with the value.

The include breakfast also more than made up for the room size - an excellent buffet with both western & japanese food selection - the best hotel breakfast we had on our trip !

So overall - could not recommend the hotel more highly for anyone visiting this historic city.

Loved Hotel Active, great location, easy to find! Walking distance to the Peace park etc, even walking distance to the JR station - although if you're just arriving with luggage I'd advise catching a street car as there is a stop around the corner.

Hotel was extremely modern and very clean, free internet in the lobby. Nice staff, with a bit of english. LOVED the brekky every morning, good selection of japanese and western foods. Hot drinks are free on every level at the little machine - best hot chocolates ever!

Overall, a great little place to stay. AMAZING value too!

  • Liked — The great breakfast included in the cheap room rate!

This hotel was perfect for our needs. Bang opposite the vibrant and stimulating red light district of Hiroshima, you are within walking distance of restaurants and entertainment. The hotel was far and away the cheapest of our stay in Japan, but clean, smart and extremely practical. Internet is available in reception and buffet-style breakfast is included in the price (though please don't expect the best meal of your life). Tea and coffee facilities are available by the lifts on each floor, complimentary shampoo etc is handed out at reception. This hotel is perfect for the backpacker, independent traveller or anyone passing through Hiroshima.

We stayed in a double room late September for about 7,500 yen per night, including buffet breakfast.

The good:

1. Modern, simple and very, very well priced. This was the cheapest place we stayed at during our Japan trip and was surprisingly good. I'm not sure if they offer bigger rooms with bigger beds, but if they did, I would actually pay a bit more for a bigger bed.

2. Location - in between the train station and the sights. The hotel map says it's 3 tram stops from the station, but it's also an easy 10-15 minute walk. Even with luggage (wheelies), it was easy to get to at night. Just grab a map from the tourist office at the station. It's also walking distance to the A-bomb dome (maybe 15 mins?) and just a couple of streets away from the streets with all the nightlife.

3. Breakfast - breakfast was not super exciting, but everything was fresh - given the price of the accommodation, breakfast was surprising edible. There was a wide enough selection and, perhaps due my lack of coffee consumption in the weeks leading up to this, the nescafe coffee from the machine was surprisingly good!

The not so good:

1. The bed in the double room was tiny. It was probably a double bed, but it seemed smaller... One side was pushed up against the wall, which was actually a good thing, cos the wall probably stopped me from rolling off in the middle of the night. The bed was also a bit too firm for my liking (we preferred the futons in the Westernised ryokans we'd stayed at earlier on in our trip).

2. The room was small and, for the first time, I actually felt a bit claustraphobic in a hotel room. I've stayed in small hotel rooms before and the size of this one was probably not the smallest, but they try to fill it with so much - a desk (not huge, but too big for the room) and a chair that was definitely way too big for the room and got in the way. If they get rid of the silly chair and down-size the desk, this would make the room heaps more spacious.

Overall, a good, modern, small hotel at a great location for a very good price.

  • Liked — Great location and great value
  • Disliked — Small, hard bed and small room crowded by the furniture
