“Take pictures outside and move on”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2014

There are a number of exhibits inside, but they are of very limited interest. The building has historical context and the grounds are beautiful.

“Very nice park area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2014 via mobile

We were walking past the government house en route to Sapporo Factory and decided to visit the 'red brick house'. The government house is interesting if you have traveled elsewhere in Japan because it was built so recently and in a distinctly American fashion as part of their colonization of Hokkaido. The art show that was on onside was interesting and English translations are available for most displays. The park area outside we found much more interesting and relaxing. We'll worth a visit if you are in the area visiting the botanic gardens or walking around central Sapporo.

“Gardens, history, peaceful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

Passed through on a walk about the city one evening and really enjoyed the serenity of the place. Sign said admission to the building was free, but it was closed so we didn't go. Very pretty place to hang out.

“Good place to go on a rainy day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2014

This old red brick building, completed in 1888 and called Akarenga by the locals, contains two floors of rooms devoted to The history of Hokkaido in general and Sapporo in specific. I found an old geologic map of Hokkaido from the late 19th century. One room is devoted to the dispute between Japan and Russia over the northern islands. Another room is devoted to the Sapporo beer company and other food products. Another rooms contains commemorative objects and letters from world leaders and countries, including a thank you note from Pres. George Bush. We moseyed through this museum on a rainy day, enjoying the paintings in the hallways depicting the history of Hokkaido as well as the space itself, with a grand staircase and large, high-ceiling end rooms.

“Unexpected museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

Initially we thought we were only going to stroll round what is a massive red brick building with a lot of impressive architecture dating from 1888 for a photo opportunity. In fact you can go in for free, to see a fairly basic exhibition relating to the relationship between the regions of Hokkaido and Sakhalin - much of it more interesting than it sounds. There are pamphlets in English for an explanation as to what is in each of the rooms.
