“Cute and Good Effort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2014

It was my 9th Anniversary weekend and I wanted to do something different and was choosing between Amanfayun and Chaptel. The only reason I did not go with the 'safe' choice of Amanfayun was due to reviews online about the food being a disappointment and i did not want to be held hostage in a remote resort.

Chaptel was pretty quaint although one could easily miss the entrance. It was rather bizarre to share the building with some Korean government building and have the locals live right across the lane, but I guess that is part of the charm. The beds were really comfortable, and being a movie buff, I thoroughly enjoyed the free movie on demand. Breakfast was very average.

It was obvious the hotel was new, there was no 'do not disturb' sign, so the maid were cleaning the bathroom when we woke up, the staff also failed to communicate details like the butler service (which I read about much later), breakfast ends at 1030am, and there was free bicycle rental.

Overall good effort, but definitely need more finishing touches.

It is an unforgettable living experience in Chaptel Hangzhou. I cannot fall asleep all the time because I was exploring the wonders of this unique hotel. It is an ancients-returning building, the old-fashioned telephone, ceiling fan and match brings me back to the period of the Republic of China. It’s acceptable to enjoy living in a whole building by spending only 3000RMB. This hotel is not as depressing as other hotels. I feel free and warm in it as if I’m in my own home. The staff is considerate and pastry is nice.

It's a great surprise to stay in this very old-fashioned but quiet hotel just close to the famous parts of West Lake!

The room we stayed was a row house featuring three stories, one living room on the 1st floor, one bedroom and bathroom on the 2nd floor and one balcony on the top floor where we could enjoy sunshine there, but unfortunatly we got to the hotel late and the day got dark and rained..

The bathroom was big and showerhead was very comfortable. I love all the octagonal things in this room: lamp, paper, table, seats.. one of the staffs told us they're all custom-made!

I would also like to recommend its free bicycle rental, it‘s an awesome experience to be able to get around without terrible traffic jam and experience what West Lake truely feels like.

Thank you for your stay. Chaptel Hangzhou is the only member of Relais & Chateaux in Zhejiang Province. Only 3 minutes walk away from hotel to the West Lake. Our hotel is a typical historical & cultural boutique hotel highlighted with a great tradition of the Republic of China Era. Hope to see you again!

Stayed at Chaptel Hangzhou for two nights, I had an absolute wonderful experience. Not only was the hotel located along the Westlake and just one street with shopping malls making it very convenient to get around, but also the services and environment there were well above par. The room in particular was spacious with two floors, and I felt like coming across to the old time of grandpa’s. The breakfast was freshly offered just as I walked into the restaurant!
Generally it’s highly above five-star hotels in usual, and much worth staying in especially when your main purpose is to visit the beautiful Westlake!

Loved the bed and hot tub. Beds were very comfortable and the room was unique and beautiful . Location perfect for access to the West Lake, shopping mall and restaurants. My bedroom suite was spacious and bright. The design is very tasteful and classic. Staff always cheerful and friendly. Highly recommended. The food here is very delicious and quite unique. Both western meal and Chinese meal are very good.Personally, I recommend the Western Food, very fresh and delicious.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
More than a luxury boutique hotel, the new member of Relais & Châteaux family is also a listed building steeped in history. Created on the remnants of Shikumen villas, typical local residences in the 1930s, Chaptel Hangzhou is an architectural gem. The time-honored compound mirrors China in the past, and also leads the fashion today. The traditional Chinese wooden furniture with Art Deco ornaments show us the charm of classicism, the independent balcony and terrace in each villa open an access to the naturalism, and the incomparable hotel service brings us an enjoyment of humanism. The taste of Chaptel lies not only in its culture and history, but also the divine dishes. Xike Hall serves the authentic western food, traditional local delicacies and classic British afternoon tea. It is a great feast for tongue. Located near the picturesque West Lake and the city center, Chaptel Hangzhou is absolutely a good choice for both business and leisure purposes. ... more   less
