“EVEN more ROMANTIC if you know the story of the WHITE SNAKE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

West lake is very famous in China, not just because its amazing view but also because a love story that has passed on for many generations in China, a beautiful chinese folk story. If you visit the west lake I strongly recommand you to at least read a bit about the story, it will make you love this place even more, you can even imagine yourself walking on the same path as the main characters in the story.

The story is called 'Legend of the White Snake', check on wikipedia, it is taoism themed. The story is about a boy saved a white snake from a hunter, and many thousand years later the snake gained the magical ability and became a beautiful woman, she then went to the west lake to search for the boy who saved her in order to thank him. she walked around the west lake for days and eventually she found him on the Broken Bridge with the help of the buddha, where they then shared a boat on the west lake and watching sunset together and eventually she married him and gave birth to a son who is a reincarnation of a god, it is a long story but I never get fed up with it.

the broken bridge on the west lake is not actually broken, the name was called because on a snowy day when the snow fall on the bridge it will cover the middle bit of the bridge, therefore if you look at it from a distant it looks broken in half.

there are so many interesting stories and history about this place, you can either just go there to relax and enjoy the view, but also learn some interesting story which may add some mysterious feeling to this place.

We loved the clean and beautiful surroundings of Westlake. We walked from the Lei Feng Pagoda all the way round to the other end of Westlake. Very romantic and worth taking a long walk with your loved ones

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

I enjoyed lots of time walking around the west lake. Enjoying all the different views from around the lake. Make sure you take a boat over to the large island in the lake. The boats are only 45 yuan for a return trip.

“A gem within a bustling city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

Even in winter, West Lake mesmerizes with its beauty. Set against the backdrop of towering misty mountains, it is no wonder that it attracts throngs of visitors since ancient times.

Walk around and be marvelled by the various historical sites and attractions. You don't need a guide. All you need is a good map (which u can request from your hotel), and an open heart to take in all before you.

“Outstanding place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

Really enjoyed our trip to West lake. We actually walked it from downtown hangzhou, which was a long walk but we really enjoyed it. The lake area itself is large and some prior research would be useful, especially when it comes to the buses. You do really need to spend some time here as its quite a large area, so make sure you factor that into your plans.
