“Not a Shangri La”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

I will briefly echo what most reviewers have said: this hotel does not deserve the name Shangri La.

The rooms are old, the place is old, the food is old. This is the only Shangri La I have been to that didn't wow me at their buffet (try the Shanghai one!).
The staff does not speak English and the service is slow.

The hotel location is very nice and quiet, but for that kind of money you expect things to be top notch.

Only worth it for people who absolutely need the Shangri La brand. Better other options in town.

I have never physically been stopped from exiting a taxi at a hotel front door by hotel staff before, but it happened here. "Where is your ticket?" he demanded. It was actually quite intimidating. It turns out it was to do with whether I should be at the East or West wing -- I was at the right place -- but one would have never known from this "welcome". Terrible staff training. The rest of the hotel -- assuming you are at the East Wing, at the Horizon Club -- was terrific. Great Club staff, lovely place. Pleasant room, wonderful lake view. Except for the bathroom. A plastic shower curtain, in a bath? I know it is historic (= retro), but really!! So, overall, recommended, but be ready to fight to get out of the taxi.

And, do not try the Italian restaurant. It calls itself the best in Hangzhou, which means the second best is a shocker. This is a drawback, as the relatively secluded, and indeed really nice, location (albeit nowhere near as so as the website might imply) means there is nothing beyond the hotel in walking destine by way of dining options..

Room Tip: Lake view worth it.

This is a great hotel if you are visiting the West Lake area. Staff are extremely helpful and it's worth paying extra for a club room. The club lounge is peaceful with beautiful views over to the lake and free drink/some food during the day.
You can walk two mins from the hotel and be on the West Lake. The rooms are big and nicely decorated in Chinese style. The swimming pool is an added bonus if you are travelling with kids. We ate a meal in the Italian restaurant which was delicious.

haven stayed in over 20 shangri la properties this does property does not qualify as a Shangr La. The bathrooms are outdated and the entire hotel gives a run down feeling. The lobby has slippery marble and potentially some where to break a bone or two. The Chinese Restuarent was just about average and they wanted to throw us out as soon as it was past 9.30. Very disapointed and the Shangri La Management needs to reconsider this hotel under their brand.

The Shangri La hotels have a very high standard and although this hotel isn't all that bad, it is definitely not what I expected.

The staff was wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. That makes a difference, but the hotel has a pretty outdated look and feel. It also misses the finishing touch I have come to expect from this chain.

The room was actually pretty average and definitely not what I expected. The first impression is that it is old and ready for a renovation. The room had a big screen TV, small safe (no way to fit a laptop in though), water boiler,a big desk and a tiny but functional bathroom with a good shower. The complimentary wired internet connection and Wi-Fi both worked well. Reliable and fast enough.

The chair for the desk was totally useless though. It was a simple chair, not an office chair. There was no way I could work at this desk for more than 10 minutes. Sitting on the bed was also not a good option since there was no power outlet nearby. The ones for the bed side lamps use the old style UK plug and without a converter they're no good.

What struck me was that this room was not maintained well. The clock on the bed had stopped working and the shaver power outlet in the bathroom was flaky.

The bed was comfortable, but the air conditioning was totally inadequate. A lot of noise, but it didn't cool the room at all. Opening a window, not a good idea in general when you're close to water, didn't help either. As a result, the room got really warm and I don't want to think about what it'll be like in summer.

Again, not what you expect at a Shangri La hotel.

With 160 RMB the breakfast buffet is overpriced, certainly when it comes to Western style food. There were no eggs cooked to order for example. Instead, the fried eggs were made in advance and didn't look very appealing. I skipped them. This could have been me, but the yoghurt tasted like a cleaning detergent and I didn't finish it. The cheese was left in the open and had dried out totally. The bread was nice though, as well as the fresh fruit. Altogether not worth the price however.

The location is great. It is at the north side of the West Lake and all you need to do is to cross the street to get to the lake. There is a Costa Coffee within 10 minutes walking. Unfortunately there are however not that many restaurants nearby, but if you don't mind a 25 minute walk along the lake you'll find several restaurants.

I think this hotel could be so much better with a bunch of relatively small changes, and an overhaul of the rooms.

First off, let me say we are Americans and may have different standards than Chinese. We were not impressed at all with this hotel. The rooms are just ok, no coffee in the room, only one drawer for clothes. Service isn't good. They told us at the desk there is only one restaurant in the vicinity other than the ones in the hotel which isn't even remotely accurate. The coffee garden restaurant is just ok. There is no furniture in the lobby to hang out in. We were traveling with others and several times we would have liked to hang out in the lobby or a place to sit while waiting on the others, but couldn't due to the lack of furniture in common areas.
They charged us almost $100 a night to put an extra bed in our room. We would definitely stay elsewhere if we returned to Hangzhou.
