“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

Maybe the hotel is a bit old as it is one of the oldest 5 stars hotel in Hangzhou, so the rooms arent fancy enough, but if you consider the price and location - nearby the west lake, it is the perfect hotel for your short stay in Hangzhou.

The location of this hotel is excellent: close to the West Lake and some famous spots. I really enjoyed the food there, it was not so expensive compared to the room rate. We lived in a villa and it was incredibly quiet and secret.

However, the hotel was a little bit old - as written by most of the reviewers. This was very 90's China style, but they should have make some changes so the room would at least appear to be worthy of the expensive rate.

Room Tip: Rooms in Villa is great

Because the public transportation is not very convinient in Hangzhou, it's lucky that I chose to stay here. Easy to access most of the famous attractions in Hangzhou. I went there in November, the weather was nice. Hotel room is a bit old though, with funny smell in the room.

The property used to be the Hangzhou State Guest House, only that it is now managed by the Shangri La group, as such, it is below usual expectation of a Shangri La hotel.

The room was spacious with high ceiling, and facing the West Lake (Xihu), but doesn't worth the extra premium because the view is totally blocked by trees (see my photo).

The mattress in my room was absolutely below the standard of a Shangri La, it was sagged due to heavy usage (see my photo). A top international brand hotel should not fail in this, but they did.

They really need to fix the door closers so as to mitigate the louder than nornal banging noise from closing doors, I had group tours close to my room, people go in and out of their rooms more frequent and the noise from those doors were killing many guests.

Staffs are in general friendly and helpful, but need improvement at the buffet breakfast section. Guests needed to ask for coffee/tea, while used plates were not collected until requested. The food was average.

Room Tip: Corridors are very long, if you do not mind to walk, ask for a room near corridor ends where you hav...

The Hangzhou Shangri-La Hotel is located on the northwest bank of the West Lake. From the east building there are great views over the beautiful West Lake, from the west there are views of lush foliage and the flowering shrubs of the hotel gardens. I think it is the premier choice among Hangzhou luxury hotels.

Stayed in horizon club room. The service there was really great - prompt, attentive, patient n proactive. They were ready with good directions n suggestions on where n how to go. The facilities however is dated, though it is relatively well maintained. Taxis during peak hour is not easily available too. On the other hand, it is close to quite a few tourist/scenic spots -岳王庙,苏堤,印象西湖,n walking distance to various Chinese restaurants.

This is my preferred home from home in Hangzhou.
Mature trees and well-kept landscaped gardens.
And what's better, every taxi driver in the city knows where it is, (if you remember to call it by it's easily remembered Chinese name of Shangri-lee-la). So getting home is always easy.

The selection of Western cuisine is very good if you want a rest from the local food. And they have a great little Italian restaurant in the east wing.
The main restaurant has a great terrace if you want to eat outside.
Breakfast buffet is a treat.
Also, it's got a clean indoor swimming pool, which is safe to use (unlike most other "pools").

You are just across the road from the West Lake gardens, definitely worth a stroll, but be careful crossing that road, it's dark and fast.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the lake. The view out the back is disappointing.
