“I rate it as 2 star”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2012

This hotel was recommended to us by a travel agent and we regret going along with their suggestion. The rooms were not really clean and sheets were yellowed. Though we requested a non-smoking room, on the day of check-in, we were told that none were available. Free Internet was available but not wi-fi. The hotel's website talked about its swimming pool but there was no pool!

It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the West Lake but the more scenic areas of West Lake are much further away. Plenty of malls in the area and plenty of fast food too but not easy to find good Chinese food in the area.

Buffet breakfast was just ok - plenty of Chinese options, with good soupy noodles but average in the Western choices.

The West Lake is really beautiful and I think its worth paying a bit extra for a better hotel for an overall better experience.

I had picked this hotel thinking it was a little closer to West Lake than it was. The walk there took 20 -25 minutes but we enjoyed all that one experiences while walking in new surroundings. The staff were very pleasant, willing to get someone with better English skills to help as necessary. They seem to want to show they can be a destination for foreign visitors. The room was clean and comfortable. We arrived at the end of the dinner hour and were served without question but without any interaction either. We would recommend this hotel for the price and service. We had our breakfast at West Lake so I can't comment on the breakfast. Not suitable if you want a view of West Lake.

Sunny Hotel, a 4-star hotel (at least that's what the hotel website says) is strategically-located in the middle of the main business district in Hangzhou. It faces a busy road, which is a convenience in a city like Hangzhou, where cabs are pretty hard to find. Shopping malls are within a short walking distance, but the main tourist attractions in Hangzhou and the famous West Lake are not as near (around 30 minutes on foot).

The lobby spells 1990's all over it; well, in fact, the whole hotel looks like it's taken straight off the 90s. The cafe and a few shops you can find on the ground floor look pretty drab and uninspiring- a renovation is what they need. Our room also looks very 90s, but it has a decent-sized bathroom (bathrooms in China tend to be very small by Western standards), hard-but-comfy beds (the Chinese people love their beds hard), and a large TV. The carpets, however, look like they're in need of an urgent steam cleaning, though. To our great convenience, there's also a computer, complete with free and fast internet connection, in our room. Wicked!

The service is excellent. I requested for a universal travel adaptor at 1am (my phone just had to die then) and it literally took them just a few minutes to get the stuff right to my room. The cleaning lady also did a good job, and our room was always spic-and-span throughout our stay. The smiling concierge staff were also very helpful. We even got a free painting when we checked out; it's not expensive or anything substantial, but the thought's nice.

As with most other hotels in China, language barrier was an issue, since most of the staff members couldn't at all communicate in English. The reception staff, however, spoke basic, you-understand-me-and-i-understand-you English, and this made checking in and out of our room a breeze.

Overall, it's a good hotel (if you don't mind staying in a room that makes you feel like you're in 'The Bodyguards') with excellent service. Definitely worth paying AUD50+ per night.

I stayed here for two nights while visiting Hangzhou. It is conveniently located about 15 minutes walk from the West Lake and in the middle of a busy shopping district. The service was quite good. The rooms were ok, although the beds were a bit hard and things felt a bit aged. The breakfast buffet was ample but not of particular quality. But for 450 RMB a night, it was a good deal.

This is a good 3-star hotel...pure and simply. Don't get too thrilled. Nothing flash, nothing glam....OK location, OK price, The rooms? Circa 1990 in a faux-plush White House decor. The lobby? again, an odd place.....ugly shops, lifts followed by the check in. .again, faux glam white marble 1990. For most guests its probably "heavenly" or the equivelant. Check in staff are as polite as a dentist draill....ie, not. Very Chinese idea of service...they do a "job" and nothing else...courtesy, smiles, or a hello to a guest is NOT part of the job. (Eventually hotels will invest in client service training, but while the loots rolling in, why bother?). Lots of scraps of paper fly in duplicate flying about are required for check-in...Again, China 1990 (sorry to repeat the point).. Clean rooms (the cleaning ladies in China always do a great job). Breakfast....for 50rmb, I ate lots of porridge and watermelon and took two bananas for the train....enough said.
