Here it is while still fresh as I have been at the hotel 2 days and will be here another week.
The outside of the hotel displays grandiose and somewhat novel curved architecture. Inside, the feeling in the lobby is a cold and uninviting place with large square and rigid spaces clad in gold accents to further the theme of grandeur. Not surprisingly, this all reflects the rigid posture of the staff. For example, three sentries stand at attention in the middle of the restaurant during breakfast, looking understandably ill at ease, then move forward robotically, to remove plates as they are trained. Meanwhile, the breakfast chefs niether look at you or smile while serving the food. My only staff request (an electrical conversion plug) was efficiently accomodated.

My room is on the North side of the building however and the view is not inviting so I suggest that if you do stay here, get a south side room to overlook the canal zone. The nearby Canal Zone offers a great place to walk, some interesting museums, a few restaurants, and Chinese people taking advantage of the large public spaces for dancing and other forms of recreation. If your goal is to explore the Westlake area this is probably a poor choice since a long cab ride will be required. The cab ride from the Hangzhou train station was about 35 rmb. When the taxi que is long, scalpers will attempt to give you a ride for about $150 and a bit less if you barter. This is probably a poor choice if you want a large variety of good restaurants within walking distance and want to explore the Westlake area. Last word - overall okay but weak on hospitality.
Ask for the south side of the building for the canal view. The upgraded rooms are comfortable and at...
