“Temperature in this hotel is MESSED UP”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

We stayed here for 1 night and that's enough. We woke up at 4am because the room temperature was at 29. Tried to adjust it but it didn't work... The shower handle is very hard to use, from cold to hot only have 4 levels, so you probably won't get the water temp that you are comfortable with, either too cold or too hot. Bath towels were dirty.

The Braim Hotel was just OK as far as the room goes. I have found that in China the rooms are not as clean as we expect in the US of similarly priced rooms. The bed was clean and comfortable with nice linens. However, it appears that in China most hotels (not the Marriott) turn off the air conditioning at midnight and leave it off till 6:00 am. The room temperature climbed to the high 80's and that is totally unacceptable. I had very little sleep and cannot recommend the hotel because of the air conditioning situation. I would assume that in the winter one would freeze as the policy on heat would probably be the same.

Room Tip: Find out ahead of time about the air conditioning and choose another hotel

Thr Braim Canal Hotel is the perfect location in which to enjoy the night time activity which
Takes place across the street in the square near the museum. The rooms are comfortable, clean and contain all of the amenities needed by forgetful travelers : slippers, toothbrush/ paste, comb....etc, in the evening the locals come out to enjoy themselves. Several dancing groups and other exercise groups turn on the music and enjoy the rhythms. Families enjoy time together. Inline skating lessons for children, funny cartoon cars for kids, old friends chatting and enjoying the night air. Nearby is a foot bridge over the canal, which leads to traditional looking buildings which now house restaurants and tea houses. This a great way to see how the Chinese enjoy life.

Here it is while still fresh as I have been at the hotel 2 days and will be here another week.

The outside of the hotel displays grandiose and somewhat novel curved architecture. Inside, the feeling in the lobby is a cold and uninviting place with large square and rigid spaces clad in gold accents to further the theme of grandeur. Not surprisingly, this all reflects the rigid posture of the staff. For example, three sentries stand at attention in the middle of the restaurant during breakfast, looking understandably ill at ease, then move forward robotically, to remove plates as they are trained. Meanwhile, the breakfast chefs niether look at you or smile while serving the food. They have performed their duty, serving a good variety of typical international breakfast offerings, and have nothing more to offer in terms of hospitality. My only staff request (an electrical conversion plug) was efficiently accomodated.

On the positive side, thanks to an upgrade, my room is attractive and comfortable. The bed is firm but soft and the water is hot. My room is on the North side of the building however and the view is not inviting so I suggest that if you do stay here, get a south side room to overlook the canal zone. The nearby Canal Zone offers a great place to walk, some interesting museums, a few restaurants, and Chinese people taking advantage of the large public spaces for dancing and other forms of recreation. There is also a large budget oriented indoor shopping mall and grocery store, as well as basic buffet style restaurants (no english spoken) within an easy 5-10 minute walk. If your goal is to explore the Westlake area this is probably a poor choice since a long cab ride will be required. The cab ride from the Hangzhou train station was about 35 rmb. When the taxi que is long, scalpers will attempt to give you a ride for about $150 and a bit less if you barter. This is probably a poor choice if you want a large variety of good restaurants within walking distance and want to explore the Westlake area. Last word - overall okay but weak on hospitality.

Room Tip: Ask for the south side of the building for the canal view. The upgraded rooms are comfortable and at...

Stayed one night with a tour group. After our previous hotel, this was a disappointment. Had the same plywood hard beds typically found in Chinese hotels. Slow draining shower and toilets didn't flush that well. They were also pretty skimpy with the toilet paper.

I had a room on the top floor which has a fantastic view. Room was comfortable with lots of space. The hotel was about 1 year old and already showing signs of neglects in maintenance. Bath room has a funny smell of blocked drains.

Slept in this hotel only one night, so that I can’t really express an opinion on the location.
The rooms are quite large and everything new. Everything very clean.
Beds very comfortable with wonderful white linen.
Bathrooms spacious and very modern with plenty freebies.
Breakfast, as in other Chinese hotels but you can always find something to eat
Generally a good hotel
