“Restaurant was very good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

We actually stayed down the road at the Grand Park - but wished we had stayed here instead. We went to the restaurant here one evening and it was surprisingly good. The food was great and it was cheaper than Shiping Hall and the Grand Park's restaurant. Impressed.

I had a very short one night stay at The Green Lake Hdrdotel but appreciated its luxury and service none the less. The public spaces are grand and elegant with beautiful floral displays.

My room was very comfortable (a relatively soft bed) with a modern bathroom and great amenities. There were some nice touches, cookies and fruit in the room and plenty of complimentary water.

Breakfast wasn't a good as I'd hoped but there was a huge choice of Asian breakfast options.

We booked an Executive Suite with a Green Lake view on a non smoking 12th floor. Reception was carried out on the 2nd floor at the Executive reception desk. Our room had beautiful flowers and a bowl of fresh fruit. Breakfast could either be taken on the 2nd floor or ground floor, we chose the ground floor as there was a greater choice of food. Breakfast was one of the best we had experienced in our China trip, with large choices of Western and Chinese food – eggs were cooked to order. We ate dinner in the evening in the same restaurant, which had an English menu. The Hawaii pizza that was hand made here was the best we have tasted anywhere in the world. All the Hotel staff were friendly & helpful. English was spoken at reception.
The suite was luxurious with the bedroom and separate lounge room having their own air-conditioning controls – air conditioning was very effective. Our King size bed was soft and comfy, two toilets, shower and bath. The bath & one toilet had an LCD television. All four televisions had Western & Chinese channels. Windows open for fresh air, curtains were electrically controlled from the bedside – a blackout and a curtain. Comfy couches with seating for five, computer in the lounge room, free China Daily newspaper, big room safe was bolted into the cupboard. Complimentary drinks, fruit and snacks on the executive floor together with bowls of apples & bananas outside the lift lobby.
We used the Hotel Audi A6L for airport transfers and day trips – the driver was fantastic and drove safely.
The two negatives that we found were that some people smoked in the lobby and in the lift.
The Hotel English website does not function properly and requires some work on the software. We also had great difficulty communicating with the Hotel via email.
Apart from the above we really enjoyed our stay and would certainly return to this luxurious Hotel.

Out of multiple Yunnan hotels we stayed in, this was the best. The location is lovely, with Green Lake right outside (although it was largely inaccessible due to city improvements along its banks.) The rooms were very comfortable and well-appointed, certainly to Western standards, and the lobby is lovely. But there are a few things you need to be prepared for if you're an American tourist. First, the staff speaks almost no English. We had to rely on a translator for several issues; otherwise, we would have been helpless communicating. But it would be even worse at any other Kunming hotel, so Green Lake is your best bet.

The breakfast is very extensive, with a variety of both Western and Chinese selections. You'll find something for every appetite.

My local Chinese relatives told me this is definitely the best luxury hotel in Kunming. I would have to agree.

Stayed here before and after my yunnan tour. There is lots of construction in the city. Took forever to getting and out. The construction outside also destroyed the charm of the green lake in front of the hotel. The room is clean and comfortable like all business class hotel. Told by the guide that it is the best in the city. Staff service is minimal.

The best in Kunming. But "best" is, as I wrote earlier in a review of the Chinese Yangshuo Resort in Yangshuo, relative. "Best in town" does not necessarily mean the best they can but for this provincial city of 6 million people (August 2012) surely tnothing to find better than this one.

It reminds me of a rule I learned from many foreign trips: the larger and shinier the lobby, the smaller the rooms. Check it out it turns out to be often true, for this hotel as well. Certainly a comfortable hotel, but don't expect the five star standard you can expect in other major Asian cities like Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul or even Jakarta. The rooms are small, so is the bathroom (we stayed in a "business room” on the more quieter backside (“town view”). Yet it has all the luxury you need to make your stay comfortable in this very fast growing city of 6 million.

Breakfast is just excellent with a wide choice (both Asian and Western). A big issue in this hotel is the staff's English, which is somewhat surprising in a city that wants to be a magnet for tourism (I guess also from outside China), yet English is a problem (even lacking basic terms that will be used many times by non-Mandarin speakers will use when checking in). However once you have managed to explain what you want, you’ll have it within the minutes. Friendliness at the reception can be improved. When I tried to get a bigger room complaining that I had made a reservation for a luxury room but got a standard business room, the (male) receptionist was very unfriendly and even rude (they are in need of some thorough training how to deal with demanding customers). It then appeared that “business rooms” come in two forms: 35m2 for a standard room, 40m2 for a luxury room, still very small. You can ask lake view so that’s where you will be paying for (when we were there the view of the lake was blocked due to construction along the river/park). The small coffee bar in the reception area serves the best coffee in town, so tells my guide.
All in all a pleasant stay, but surely soon be outpaced by competition once more foreign tourist come into town.

We stayed here for one night on our way to Dali, and at first glance the hotel looked great. The lobby was very nicely appointed, and the public areas were all very modern. The rooms were nicely appointed as well, although the fixtures were a bit gaudy. There seems to be a bit of a grey area between smoking and non-smoking (our room came with an ashtray), so if you are allergic I wouldn't stay here.

My main complaint is with the service. First off, English is virtually nonexistent, if I hadn't been with someone who spoke Mandarin, it would've been a fairly difficult stay. Secondly, the breakfast was poorly run. It was terribly crowded, and they barely "clean" the tables before the next guest, so our table was fairly dirty. The coffee/tea servers actively avoided us. The buffet itself had a fine selection. Check out was frustrating: All three receptionists were "in training" and none spoke more than a couple words of English.
