You can climb the 1000 stairs from the bottom at the lake or take the cable car. We took the cable car. At the base there are clean toilets and a fast food restaurant that was quite good. You can take a tram or the chairlift from there. If you take the tram it takes you to the start of another 1000 stairs where you will pass different temples and finally arrive at the Lions Gate. If you take the chair lift you arrive above Lions Gate and are able to walk down to it. We didn't take the chair lift and wish we would have as it is quite a climb and the air is thin because of the altitude. The views of Kunming and surrounding country are spectacular form the multitude of vantage points along the way. Go on a clear day!

“Exotic but too crowded...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

The exotic temple structures and birds eye view of the Kunming city are a good drivers for this trip. It is not so expensive, so the whole Kunming city appears to go there on Saturdays...

The narrow passages were clogged with people what made my enjoyment level quite low...

“A Kunming Must See”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Great views over the lake, clean air and a very stiff climb. Take the cable car and if you are elderly or have very young children the ski lift as well. Mind you, if you do not climb or decend the section between the summit and the dragon gate temples in the cliff you do miss out quite a bit. Stairs are slippery when wet, be careful.

“West Mountain Dragon Gate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

Been there twice now. Well worth the visit to just sit and take in the views. Best to take the chair lifts (both if you start from the Dianchi Lake). From the second chair there is a small walk to the top lookout pavilion. Take into account the altitude at 2000 meters if you come from a low lying country.

The walk back down is spectacular with many vantage spots from the various temples. Can get very busy and crowded but don't let that spoil the experience, you are, after all, in China. From the bottom gate you can either walk back down to the Dianchi, walk along the road back to the main bus area or catch a minibus back along the road to the main bus area.

There are restaurants at the bus stop (top chair lift lower load station), under the top chair lift load station (local type food and less expensive) and also near the bottom gate.

When I was there there was some new tourist buildings being constructed at the bottom gate.

“impressive, but go on a clear day!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

Amazing that monks carved their way into the rock, it's craggy and not for the faint-hearted. Worth the trip! A tip is to book a driver through your hotel as it's not easy to get to. Drivers aren't expensive (200 yuan tops for a return journey and they'll wait for you at the destination so you can leave at any time).
