This is the second time we stayed at the HQ apartment in two years, so we are very partial to this place and the people running it.
Though we do agree with one of the previous reviewers about the wet bathroom- that it could be dangerous and that improvement could be made to provide a dry area in the bathroom- we found the bathroom slippers provided do help.
This time the six of us stayed in two apartments with kitchens, living rooms, and indoor balconies. It was definitely a much welcome change from your usual hotel rooms which we had to stay in all other places in China. The apartments are huge, and the rates for the apartments are not bad either- very reasonable.
We did enjoy cooking dinner with fresh ingredients purchased at the nearby market. The dry fruit shop in the area sells really fresh roasted nuts- pistachios, almonds etc. at a reasonable price. We just felt like being at home doing our morning round of shopping.
Location wise, it is very convenient- three minute walk to the Great Mosque and the Moslem market area, and few more to the drum and bell towers.
By the way the five of us are over fifty year old ladies and one over sixty year old man. All the entrances to the historical places are either half price or free for a sixty-year-old or over. It's worth asking the ticket counter at the sites as this could help you save a bit.
Mei's mom was a godsend to us. She went out of her way to help us buy overnight train tickets to Pingyao and, again, went with us to the station to return the tickets when we found out that it was not the soft sleeper we had bought. Every morning we found home made buns or freshly steamed sweet potatoes on our door with a smile. We wouldn't want to change anything with regard to the warmth we felt through Mei's mom and her gentle dad.
The van rental provided by the apartment was at a better rate than the ones we'd contacted via email. A mobile phone provided by the apartment was very useful as you can contact Mei directly if you want to. Though Mei is not there at times, you can either phone or email her (wifi is provided in the apartments), her response was fast and efficient. Her mom knows exactly what you need through Mei, who phones her to make requested arrangements.
We love this place and the people here. We would definitely be back.
