“Unexpected upgrade”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

Could not fault this hotel or the staff. Upon arrival we were upgraded to a suite instead of the room we booked. It was comfortable, and for china very spacious. The buffet breakfast is excellent, with a great variety of foods to choose from, also the buffet dinner again was excellent value.
The restaurant staff were very attentive.
The location of the hotel is also in a great spot, the shopping malls are in walking distance. Would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Beware the beds (mattresses) in China are extremely hard, so try to remember to ask for a soft bed.

Situated in almost-the-center (the Bell Tower is center) of the walled city of Xi'an, the Sofitel is a modern, stylish, westernized, clean and comfortable hotel. The location is within walking distance to the Bell & Drum Towers (approximately 10 min), but not much else nearby other than local places on the crowded, teeming streets. This is a fascinating city, from the wall surrounding the city, the Drum & Bell Towers, Chinese-Muslim section, and especially for its own history and of course, the reason many come to Xi'an ... the Terracotta Warriors (approximately 45 min - 1hour by bus # 306 (also labelled # 5) from outside the train station). Let's get to the review of the hotel:

The Good: The Sofitel is modern & comfortable within reasonable distance to many destinations. We arrived into Xi'an via the Airport bus which dropped us off near the Bell Tower. It is a do-able long walk to the hotel, approximately 10-15 min, but if you have serious luggage, get a taxi. The streets are teeming with people (day & night), and the ubiquity of street food, tourists, activities, mopeds, scooters, cars, buses, traffic from all directions, along with the total disregard for traffic lights (just follow what the locals do), makes it not for the light-of-heart. It was fascinating to see the people, culture, customs, and interactions throughout. The hotel is clean, well maintained and driven by a gracious, courteous staff. Check-in/out was efficient, but curiously, English is not even close to being a strong suit here, especially given an international hotel, as we had great difficulty in even asking for a rubber band, but the effort to interact was there. We had a very spacious room with (2) double-sized beds, along with a very nice seating area consisting of a small sofa, (2) side-chairs, a small desk for you business-types or postcard writers, and a beverage sideboard. Additionally, there was a small walk-in closet that included robes, and in-room safe, slippers, shoe-brush/horn, and other basic amenities. A nice side event: down the street, next door almost, was a government building & compound that had a nightly flag-lowering ceremony at 6:00PM, complete with partially closed street, regiment(?) of soldiers in dress uniforms marching from their barracks(?) with sabers and rifles for the performance. Aaahh ... local customs.

The Bad: Xi'an and much of China is at times, notorious for its smog and pollution. Stepping off the bus in the center of the city, we were not disappointed. There was a haze blanketing the city, and the air was acrid, smoky and noticeably dense...making one want to get a mask. Thankfully, it lasted only for a day+, but enough to jolt us into the reality of "This is the growing China!" Now, you may say this is not the hotel's fault or what is the relevance?.... very simply, it was almost the same feeling in our room. Upon entering our room, it was warm, so we turned down the thermostat so that the Air Conditioning can cool the room. After a few hours taking a walk outside, having dinner, we came back, but the room improved only minimally. The air was musty, smoky-like and still a tad warm, so we thought the A/C was not working. Checked the vent and did feel some air coming out. It was warm & weak ... plus they probably needed new filters. We didn't think it was super clean air. We did end up opening some windows to cool down and freshen the air... ironically, with the street air. We had a rear-facing view, we believe of the "Xi'an People's Hotel", but it was darkened and likely closed(?). The beds were somewhat hard, but expected as the norm for China. The bathroom was small, with stall-shower and separate tub. Unfortunately, the shower water temperature was uneven during use, and the overhead rain-showerhead did not work (used the handheld wand-like shower spray instead). Reminder: do not drink or brush with the tap water!! ... use the provided complimentary (2) bottles of spring water. The restaurants served passable, but mediocre food. It was uninteresting, bland, and no where close to what we expected .. even as a hotel restaurant.

Summary: We have had some wonderful experiences under the Sofitel brand at other locations. We were hoping for same here, plus the 5-star ratings (via TripAdvisor & others), enticed us to come to this hotel. We were a little disappointed. This was more of a 3.5 star experience for us. Please don't misunderstand: the hotel was fine, at a 3.5 star level, but we were expecting the 5-star level, or 4-star minimum. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad ... somewhere in-between. We were comfortable and it was clean. Some travellers raved about this hotel, we will not. It was ok.

Happy Hotel-ing !!

Room Tip: Choose a rear facing room to avoid major street traffic noise.

The location was ideal with good restaurants within. The pool was quite cool for a 23 degree temperature. Big room but needs some improvement. The bathroom was immaculate clean and well maintained. Housekeeping was attentive.

Apart from the superb high quality food, the staff were also highlights of our stay at the hotel. The delightful and very helpful girls in the executive lounge, Annie, Zoe, Cathy, Celine and Emily, made our upgrading very worthwhile.
A big thank you to the knowledgeable staff particularly Candy, on the front desk.
Bike riding on the wall is a must and the taxi hire for 4 to 5 hours for a trip to the warriors at a cost of 300 rmb was a good way to go.

Good hotel in keeping with the brand. Well located, walking distance to the main sights within Xi'an. Quite large and with a selection of restaurants; more expensive than eating out but as with all hotels you pay for the convenience. Concierge sorted us out with the trip to the warriors and that went well. The company used were reliable and helpful, just be prepared as with all trips to go with the flow.

We should have asked for another room - but we arrived after midnight, exhausted. There was no bellman, so we looked around for the check in desk. There are 2 lobbies and you can check in at either. In our case, we were placed in the other set of buildings. With the vague description from the desk manager after checking in, we had to go back inside to have him walk us into the driveway and point to where to go. We schlepped our own bags back out through the complex to the other tower - again, no one there to guide you, you have to ask and the elevator system is rather confusing. We could smell dampness as we stepped out of the elevator and observed water in the hallway outside our room. Yes, there was obvious water damage in the bathroom and it smelled of mildew very badly. At the sink, you could not turn the hot water on all the way, as the handle of the fixture hits the mirror. Lovely choices of decor, overall poorly executed. The room was oppressively hot - the thermostat was actually turned off (it was 10 degrees F outside). Trying the AC gave us hot air. We thankfully opened the windows for 15 minutes until it was cool enough to sleep. You could not keep them open due to the road noise. Breakfast had a pretty wide spread of dishes, but they ran out often and you had to wait at any of the stations as there was not enough chefs (unmanned). The coffee was warm, not hot, and you had to track down someone for a second cup. It's star rating is not accurate.
