“Grand Mercure Xian on Remin Square”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2012

We had a standard room and it was large and comfortable. Beds were nice although duvet could be a bit thicker. The bathroom was large and everything was clean.

The first morning we were woken up at 7.30am from the sportsground next door, very noisy sports event with microphones blaring. So we asked to move and it was no problem - garden side was much quieter. The hotel is set within an area with other hotels and one was undergoing renovation so there was noise from that in the morning too in the first room, but ok once we moved rooms.

The garden is very nice in the centre and the area is generally quiet aside from the above. About 12 minute fast walk to Bell Tower so location is ok.

You can use the Sofitel pool, which was why I booked the hotel but the pool was 26 degrees which was too cold to swim in my opinion and I could not swim in it, which I found disappointing.
The spa pool was ok to sit in though.

The staff were helpful and polite, not terribly knowledgeable for Western tourists and the English could be much better.

Pleasant enough stay but make sure room is not facing sportground.

Room Tip: See above - avoid sportground side.

This is part of a massive complex. The good thing is that you can use the facilities at the nearby Sofitel. Breakfast was so so. The staff are very cordial and have good customer service.

Stayed two nights. Well appointed hotel, exceptionally quiet rooms, in a good location. There is no bar or restaurant in the hotel, but the Sofitel in the same complex provides these services in easy walking distance.

Room Tip: Avoid a room facing the back of the hotel - facing an apartment complex. Trash gets picked up early...

We stayed in Xian for one night and this hotel was very affordable, $75 for 2 people including breakfast! One advantage of staying in this hotel is situated within a larger compound with and you can also use the amenities of the more expensive hotels without paying their more expensive room rates.

We arrived on a flight from Beijing and was promptly ripped off by our taxi driver who decided not to turn the meter on, drove like a maniac and attempted to charge us 250 RMB. We did haggle with him and ended up paying 200RMB which was still overpriced but we were told it taxi fare should have only been around 100-150RMB.

The concierge and hotel staff were amazing, all fluent in English and very helpful. The bell boys who took our luggage up to our room also gave us tips on what to see and places to eat. The room was large, although it was a bit old and furniture outdated. The room was clean, comfy beds and the bathroom was very large.

The hotel is a good 20 minutes walk to the central attractions in Xi'an - the Bell & Drum towers, entrance to the City Wall and Muslim Street. We liked the walk but there isn't much to see, there is a government building next to the complex and a lot of mobile phone stores en route to the centre of town. There weren't any restaurants nearby either, so would suggest if you were staying here to eat in Muslim street which had a vast array of restaurants and street vendors which sold delicious food!

The hotel may not be as glamourous as some others, but if you want a clean hotel room that is in close vicinity to the city centre at an affordable price this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room away from tour groups as they can be a bit noisy early in the morning!

I stayed here for three nights. The hotel is very nice. You can use the facilities at the Sofitel without paying the higher room rate. There are several hotels that share the same compound. The one thing that was not so great about the hotel was breakfast, believe it or not the Chinese breakfast food was not that good! I didn't try the Western breakfast so maybe that was ok.

The most important thing to note is that the hotel is about 15 to 30 minute walk to the sights. That didn't really bother me, but if you are not in the best physical shape it could be difficult to get around. Taxis can be very difficult to find at the hotel so I ended up using the unauthorized "taxis" (basically a motorcycle with a makeshift passenger area in the back...similar to what you would find in Southeast Asia). These were very cheap and more available...but a crazy (and somewhat fun) ride as they go in and out of traffic breaking every traffic law on the way to your destination. I was keen to figure out the buses, but the hotel staff were not keen to teach you how!

English capabilities at the hotel were very good.

A couple of Xi'an tips - if the weather is ify - tour the city and the walls when the weather is nice. Tour the sights outside of the City when the weather is not so nice as most of these sights are indoors. I did it this way really by accident and it worked very well.

Another tip would be to get out of the tourist areas in Xi'an and into the local areas where you can meet real people and eat real local food....i did this a couple of times and it was the highlight of the trip....basically just leave the tourist areas (staying within the City walls) and you'll find a local area very quickly.

We stayed here on Mar 22-24. Taxi from Xi'an Xianyang International Airport to the hotel was 120 RMB. We had the hotel name written down in chinese to show the taxi driver and it seemed like he kind of knew where it was. Ive heard that if you write down the name of the Sofitel Hotel and show the taxi driver that name it may be easier because they are just right across from each other and its a better know name. The taxi driver did take us directly to our hotel though. When we checked in we got a free upgrade. The front desk was very nice and spoke english well. They helped us with our bags into our room and opened the door each time we came in and out of the hotel. We had breakfast in the hotel. It was ok and the selections where nice. This hotel is nice and convenient if you just need a clean place to stay for a few days. The only thing i didnt like was that it was cool inside the room even with the heater on. We had to ask for a portable heater. I wouldnt mind staying here again but maybe next time we will try the Sofitel since they have better restaurants and amenities. The hotel helped us with our tours and we got picked up and dropped off. Overall i give the Grand Mercure on Renmin Square and 8 out of 10.

Room Tip: A room towards the front will give you a better view of the pretty garden thats just right outside h...
