We rented bikes and cycled around the wall. It was beautiful, nice views of the old city on one side and the new city on the other. To be honest, better than the warriors! Little expensive like all the sights in China.
The city wall was restored to its original glory, which is quite impressive. A nine mile parameter surrounding the city, one can walk 12 abreast upon it!. Bicycle rentals are available (about 80 yuan for 90 minutes...). Shops are located within the complex. Interestingly enough, they have foot and bicycle races on the wall!
Worth the effort. Find the time to cycle. Perhaps half a day or more to take photos, enjoy the food and so much more.
The largest gate is the South gate, as in most historical China buildings. This is indeed impressive and therefore recommended. There are several shows throughtout the day and the buggy ride (80 RMB per person) round the wall with several stops was a great way to see the length of the wall, alternatively one can rent and cycle around. The most impressive part was the toilet at the entrance of south gate much similar to a 4/5 star hotel standard and decor.
Where else in the world can you bike on a 1000 year old wall ?. The Chinese have done well to keep this cultural icon intact and maintained it well. You can walk, rent a bicycle or hire an electric (golf cart type) car to go around the wall. It is about 10 miles around. The surface is uneven and can get bumpy. It an experience that you will remember for a lifetime. Well worth doing.
