“Hotel taken over by anti Japanese mob”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012 via mobile

We arrived at the hotel on September 18th to find the front windows broken out, blood on the sidewalk, and soldiers occupying the hotel. We were told that a mob had attacked the hotel demanding that they turn over all Japanese tourists. We were told the situation was under control, but that we would only be safe if we remained in the hotel under the protection of the soldiers. The hotel is located close to the Muslim area and they feared for the safety of American tourists. We stayed one night but would advise all over tourists to avoid the area at this time.

The location is good - metro is just outside the hotel and so are many busses. You only have to go a few meters to a restaurant, Starbucks or a shoppingcenter. On the other hand - we could hear traffic noise at all times. Earplugs didn't help. The windows in our 2 rooms only had one layer of glass and could not be closed tightly. The service was good (although the staff at the reception does not speak english well) - they gave us two rooms, that was connected with a door. On the other hand breakfast costs 60 yuan pr. person (and as we are a family of 4 that makes 240 yuan!!) and it is not worth the pay. It looks like western food but it does not taste right. We went to Starbucks and bought crossaints and made our own tea in our room - and voila, so we had a cheap breakfast. The beds are hard - but I brought my Thermarest (self-inflating camping mattress) and that solved the problem.

Splendid location in the heart of Xian. Rooms were very clean and spacious. Not a great standard of decor, but the beds were comparatively soft for China. By no means a luxury option, more a just-made-it 3 star by Western standards. The reception / concierge were efficient and helpful and it is walkig distance to the Bell and Drum towers, Mosque / Islamic quarter, City Walss and 'Bar Street'. There are two in house travel agents on the second floor who can organise trips to the Warriors. Yeah - overall great location, fair value. One drawback: very limited overhead lighting in the rooms, just three low voltage bed side and standing lights. Maybe pack a torch.

This was an okay hotel in a GREAT location. I had planned to stay at a youth hostel in Xi'an and was convinced to stay here instead as we were coming in on the night train (which was great, by the way, we did both hard and soft sleeper at different times and thought both were fine) and would want a good couple night's rest. That was a good theory. But there was an odd dampness to the sheets that never went away. I think some hotels in China use an air conditioning system that is water-based, so when you turn up the air conditioning--expecting it to dry things out--instead it gets more damp! At least that is what I can guess about the pervasive sense of dampness!

Breakfast was also just okay--the usual big buffet, but nothing really special.

On the plus side, service at reception was always good. Free wi-fi in the room was reliable. And location can't be beat--easy to walk to the Muslim quarter--dumpling restaurant across the street to the north in the two story building (by the Starbucks) was great! Definitely go there for a meal!

Overall, I wish I'd stayed at the hostel.

TRAVEL TIP: If you can figure out the transportation and you are an archeology fan, go to Han Yangling (Tomb of Emporer Jingdi). Yes, the terra cotta warriers are impressive, but the guides at Han Yangling are tremendous and the opportunity to walk directly over the excavated pits was very cool. We learned so much on this tour. I really recommend it. It made our visit to the Terra Cotta Warriors more interesting and comprehensible.

What a fantastic "location" this Tourist Hotel is in, if you are a Tourist visiting to take in the amazing City of Xian. We were quickly organised at Reception and after a long train trip from Beijing, just wanted to rest before we 'toured'. When we arrived at the room it presented as a good quality 3 star tourist Hotel room. Everything was fine, clean bathroom, carpets, tv , and A/C worked well - the only complaint we had was that 'the beds were 'hard' ! I don't mean just a little on the firm side, I mean really rock hard. For the first time ever, I had to take my bedding (doona), off the bed fold it up and sleep on top of it. We couldn't believe it, we didn't complain but I'm guessing many people would have had to.
Anyway, we would still recommend this Hotel because there are so many wonderful things to see in the near vicinity, especially the Muslim area Markets, fantastic shopping and sights ( & of course the Terracotta Warriors just out of Xian).

Room Tip: You may need to 'pay' for a great room. (The mattress may be better).

The location is opposite the historic bell tower, we awoke the first morning to see a large dance competition in full swing on the large square. This wasn't for tourists but a real competition - it was magical to see. A short walk and there were shops and restaurants in the opposite direction.

There are good places to eat, bars and shops on your doorstep. The staff in the hotel spoke quite good English and the trip to the Terracotta army was not too long. So this was a good location to see both the tourist attraction and wander into some real parts of China.
