“Best Hostel in China”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

This was the best place we stayed in during our month in China. The beds and bathroom were better than most hotels we've stayed at in China.

We ended up staying a few extra days in Xi'an just to stay at the hostel longer. They do a great tour to the Terracotta Army every day, and the atmosphere is a great mix of young backpackers and older budget travelers.

The coffee is overpriced, but that's the only issue I had. However, the food is good, and unlike the coffee, it is reasonably priced.

Room Tip: No elevator, so ask for a lower floor if possible.

The photos on the website looked much nicer than the actual rooms. Booked a Superior Double Room Private, and it was not superior. It was run down. No tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms, but hot/cold water was available in a dispenser in the corridor. Shower was mouldy. No amenities. Air conditioner was not effective. Staff not helpful. No elevator! No sheets - too hot with quilt. Overall, dingy with poor lighting.

Room Tip: No elevator, so choose the lower ground if you have heavy luggage.

We decided to stay in Han Tang House because of the positive reviews. Little did we know how much we would regret it! We booked a deluxe double room for 5 nights. The room had a lingering unidentifiable smell but the bed was comfortable with clean white sheets, working AC, roomy bathroom with shower cabin - no amenities. English speaking staff were helpful most of the times. But at night we were in for the surprise. Our room was just above of where all the "action" takes place: mezzanine reception/ restaurant/ bar/ pub. With the live music and the guests having had a little too much of the hostel's overpriced drinks, the noise was unbearable! The hostel doesn't have an elevator and our room was just beside the stairs, so we could hear practically everyone coming up or down. In the morning we were waken up early by the street noise as the window isn't well isolated! So, we didn't get to sleep a lot.
Housekeeping is very bad, all they do is change your towel - if you're lucky, we had to use ours for 3 days - and empty the trash. We had to ask the reception for toilette paper as housekeeping would never put a new roll, the room was never aired, the floor was never swept (let alone washed), the bathroom was never washed and all the furniture was dusty.

I booked a double room in Hantang House for 4 nights in September and was allocated a unit on the 4th floor. The property has no lift service, so be prepared to climb the flight of stairs and this is certainly a minus for travelers with a suitcase rather than a backpack. The room had a modern furnishing, the bed was comfortable and the toilet was clean. For a double room, the space was rather limited, especially the shower area. The hostel featured a guided tour to the Big Wild Goose area on Monday evenings and attendees only needed to pay 2Yuan for the public bus. The guide brought us to a cafe in a nearby mall, and drinks were on the house. It was a very casual session to get to know like-minded travelers, and especially for those who just arrive in Xi An may find this additional service very welcoming. However, the hostel service was rather inconsistent. The staff was friendly on the day I checked in, but were less helpful on the day I checked out and asked for directions to some sites. In terms of location, the hostel is tucked into a very heartland neighbourhood, which is a good place to observe the locals, and it is within walking distance to the Bell Tower metro station and bus stops leading to the train station. One big plus is the availability of a convenient store opposite the hostel which sells reasonably-priced requisites such as drinks, fruits and comfort food.

Room Tip: The hostel has no lift, so you may wish to request for a lower floor if you have bulky luggage. Howe...

We stayed one night in this hostel, and the hostel overall was brilliant. very clean, beautiful rooms, western style bathrooms. we shared an 8 bed mixed dorm and the overall experience was postive. Plenty of room, clean beds, plug beside each bed, shelf to store items beside bed, brilliant. food was good, a little overpriced but was mostly western food. Supermarket across the road very cheap and very close to main road.

however, I would not recommend staying here due to the horrible treatment we got from the staff. when we arrived we had to wait almost 45 mins to check in, and when we were leaving we had a 8.45pm flight from xian airport. We paid 150rmb for a taxi ,at 5.45 I ordered a taxi to come right now, and at 6.20 the taxi had not arrived so I enquirer about its whereabouts. the girl looked confused and said you ordered a taxi for 9 o clock, as our flight was at 11. I said this was not the case and the girl started to speak in mandarin to her boss, and started to laugh. I asked if I would make my flight and they continued to speak in mandarin and the girl who ordered my taxi laughed at me numerous times. I explained if we missed our flights it would cost 2000rmb to replace the flight and if we missed it could we stay there for free, and the girl laughed again, which was rather rude, as she was costing us 2000rmb and could not even offer compensation of 42rmb. the main lady sent a y out to wave down a taxi off the street, so I asked for a refund, which the woman was rather slow at issuing. I asked the workers to speak English and each time I was rather rudely told no, and laughed at. eventually we took our stuff out to the Main Street to get a taxi and the boy had not waved down a taxi almost 25 mins later. the main lady running the hostel shouted at us and waved down an unofficial taxi, which I refused to get into as we were two girls and I told her I did not want raped or murdered. Again she laughed at us and eventually at almost 7pm we had to wave a taxi down ourselves which in the end was only 90 rmb on the meter.

Although overall the hostel was good, I was horrified at the treatment and the continued insult of being laughed at and talked about in a language I do not speak, and the final straw came when I was expected to get into an illegal taxi just so we would get out of the hostels hair.

Be wary of this hostel.

We stayed here for two nights in a twin room. We arrived in Xian from Beijing at 8am. We could not find the staff at the train station to pick us up so we gave them a call. They said wait there. Five minutes later they called back to say the staff member had already left the train station with another guest, they did not wait for us even though we had emailed them before telling them when we would arrive. They told us to get a taxi by ourselves. It was very difficult for two foreigners to get a taxi from the train station. When we arrived they were nice enough. They gave us a free map. The room was clean, the beds comfortable and the bathroom very nice. The free evening activities are a bit of a joke though. They told us the first evening there was a free tour to the Big Pagoda. We came back to the hostel at seven in the evening for the tour. We then found out that the tour just included a guide bringing us on the public bus to the Big Pagoda. We would have been better off going ourselves so we did not go with them in the end. The second evening they had a tour to the Muslim Quarter. We went there everyday ourselves though so we did not go with them. They also have a tour to the Terracotta Warriors. We did not go on that though. Another guest told us it would be much cheaper to go ourselves and she was right.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in late July. It was very clean, the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable with enough room for everything we needed. Bathroom was great. The breakfast menu was great with generous serves. Coffee at the cafe at reception was very good. It was in a great location within walking distance of stations and lots of attractions. Would recommend to solo travelers and couples. Probably not great for young families but very convenient for others. Also should mention that there are quite a few steps to walk up if your room is on an upper level. We were on level 2 but staff were helpful with cases up steps etc.

Room Tip: I believe that there are backpackers type rooms. If you want your own bathroom make sure that is wha...
