“A few days in Xian”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in late July. It was very clean, the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable with enough room for everything we needed. Bathroom was great. The breakfast menu was great with generous serves. Coffee at the cafe at reception was very good. It was in a great location within walking distance of stations and lots of attractions. Would recommend to solo travelers and couples. Probably not great for young families but very convenient for others. Also should mention that there are quite a few steps to walk up if your room is on an upper level. We were on level 2 but staff were helpful with cases up steps etc.

Room Tip: I believe that there are backpackers type rooms. If you want your own bathroom make sure that is wha...

Came here from Beijing to see the Terracotta warriors. We had stayed in a traditional courtyard hotel in Beijing, this was less traditional and had more of a "tourist" feel. It was clean and comfortable but not so much to my taste. The cafe/bar was a little expensive and sold "Western" food. The bedrooms were good with functional air con'. The tours offered were well organised and we did a Panda rescue and research trip which was amazing and not at all commercialised. Accomodation was good value but sundries were expensive. The staff were not particularly helpful in general but there were exceptions. Did not like the caged birds outside the door!

Room Tip: Only choose this hostel if you enjoy being surrounded by younger travellers.

What i remembered well was that the hostel location was really great to go to anywhere, the bell tower is just about 5 minutes walk and muslim quarter is about 10. The hostel is located in a small alley (remember to print out a map, could be lil tricky to find). I stayed in this hostel because it has a private room for one person, which is rare. It was really a tiny studio with shower/toilet near the door, and a queen sized bed at the end of the room, and the room door was facing the common toilet for the floor, hence expect some noise from the squeaky door. The hostel also do not has any lift, so if you carry a fair amount of luggage, be prepared to put your muscles to work.

My first impression of the hostel was that it looked like a hotel. We had an overall pleasant stay but in hindsight, it was a bit over-priced.

Pros:
- Terra-cotta soldiers tour that didn't include shopping
- Popular with foreigners
- Chilled atmosphere in the bar/lounge area
- room size
- Security measures: having to swipe room cards to get into the hostel and each floor
- Live band
- TV

Cons:
- Room too dark
- Shower cleanliness was not ideal
- Expensive food and beverage
- Expensive taxi at 150 RMB per trip to airport/North station (do not book with hostel on arrival, wait for one at the station/airport, it costs so much less than that)

We stayed here for 2 nights in August. We booked a private quad sharing room for our family with 2 kids aged 9 & 11. We got a room which had 4 double decker beds and an attached bathroom. The room was very large & comfortable but the floor & toilet was not quite clean. The room also wasnt cleaned the next day.

The service was poor. There was only one front desk staff named Rachel who was really helpful. The others couldnt really be bothered.

Our first night, there was no power due to a storm. So we suffered in a stuffy room. The walls are really thin so you can hear everything that is going on along the corridor & downstairs. (Our room was on the first level).

The cafe/restaurant/bar was rather costly and you are not able to cook your own meals or bring food back to eat there. But, at night the street comes alive with little vendors selling all kinds of food. So getting food was easy. There's also a great noodle place closely that served excellent noodles. The Chinese Restaurant round the corner was fairly good too.

They try to sell their tours but we didnt want to go to the terracotta warriors with 20 other people so we chose to hire a private driver. We hired an English speaking guide at the museum itself. Kids enter free so in all, we spent less going on our own than if all 4 of us had gone on the tour.

The only good thing about this place is its location. The subway & bus-stop is close by and the drum tower & bell tower are walking distance.

We have stayed in other backpacker hostels in Japan & Australia. This place was disappointing given its many raving reviews.

This hotel has got the backpacker's scene down to an art. We arrived on the overnight train from Beijing, and were picked up along with a few others and taken to the hotel. We arrived at about 8:30, and the Terracotta Warrier tour left at 9:30. Even though they initially didn't seem to have any spots left for the tour, after hearing that we wanted to go, they managed to make some phone calls and find us 2 more spots. So within an hour of arriving in Xi'An, we were on our way to the Terracotta warriers. The tour was great, the tour guide spoke great English and didn't take us to any shopping areas, instead she actually discouraged us from talking to the hawkers or buying from them in case we got ripped off. At the end of the tour, we all stopped at a restaurant for a Chinese lunch at a (suprisingly) very good price.
The hotel was good, clean and quite large. Staff were helpful with directions, but seemed always very busy, they could have used another front desk staff member. The only problem was that the food and drinks were quite expensive (although you could just walk acoss the road to the convenience store and buy them there for much less), and the lounge area played very large music and had lots of people smoking, which is normal for China, but quite gross when a non-smoker coming from Canada.
Overall, this hotel was a good spot with a great location!!! Easy to walk to all the tourist attractions!

We're giving this a "Average" rating, although we wouldn't recommend it to other travellers. We stayed five nights in a triple room on the 1st floor and two nights in a double in the 4th floor.

Han Tang House is the "top choice" hostel in Xi'an in the latest edition of Lonely Planet China, however, it just isn't a snug fit for budget backpackers. It's more like an expensive western pub/bar with accommodation as a side-business.

The rooms are great, spacious, clean, with nice bathrooms. The location is perfect. The prices though, are steep and the service lacking. Especially their food is really overpriced. There are plenty of Chinese eateries on the same street where you can get cheaper food.

The ground floor "common area" feels more like a bar/pub/restaurant where you're supposed to only eat food you order at the hostel. We brought our own food from across the street and were directed to a table in the corner to eat it. They often have loud music or a live band playing on the ground floor during evenings/nights. The music penetrates the walls on the 1st floor.

The staff seemed to be more interested in mixing drinks than serving the needs of their guests. Questions were answered adequately, but the friendliness and helpfulness just wasn't there.

WiFi worked well in the ground floor pub and on the 1st floor, but not on the 4th.

Room Tip: There's no elevator, so a lower floor spares your thighs. However, the noise (bands playing, gue...
