“Lonely Planet need to go to some other restaurants!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2012

I couldn't believe when I heard that LP rated this as one of the best places to eat in the city, it's not even close. I live nearby and am always popping in, so I am not slating the place, it's just no better than average in any way, though no worse than some other restaurants nearby.
Value-wise it suffers a little from being near the Big Pagoda, so you're looking at double figures for noodles etc, and the worst thing for me is the cold...they don't heat it at all, so in winter it's ridiculous in there, eating in my hat and scarf!
But the staff are good humoured and friendly and it certainly isn't bad at all...the menu is worth seeing merely for the Chinglish translations, of which I know not whether to be scared or just laugh...

“One of the funniest English menus I've seen in China”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2011

Whoever did the translation for these menus must have been on some wild drugs, or they still are because it hasn't been changed. Some of the dishes such as "Make your own skin", and "Urine stench noodles", provide some entertainment in this drab backdrop of a restaurant. There are many locations throughout the city. Much better noodles on offer in other hole in the wall places.

“Reliable chain of restaurants frequented by locals”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2011

Noodles are big in Xi'An and this is a place to try many of them. The menus are in English and Chinese and there are pictures to guide you so you can try things. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. The toilets are not Western, but that is the only drawback for me. There are multiple locations in Xi'An. We ate at one with our host, then were wandering and looking for a place in an unknown part of town and tried another. There may be more amazing restaurants, but you can rely on this one.

“Meh, it's not the best. Family liked it about the same as anywhere else.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2011

China was a difficult spot for the family to eat. Maybe it just wasn't to our taste. Maybe we just had bad luck.

It was reasonably clean. The staff seemed to really like us. There were other Chinese eating there, not just tourists. It was very close to out hotel (Ci'en).

But it was not cheap, and the food quality didn't seem much better than anywhere else, including the dozen other restaurants in the area. Service was just okay. Food came out inconsistently

We ordered the fried rice, fried noodles both of which were so plain. A pepper-beef (pepper spice, not vegetable) that was oily and weird but tasted good. And a baked fish covered in pepercorn, cumin seed and star anise. It wasn't great.

I really wanted to be wowed, based on the Lonely Planet review. But it was just average.

“Shouldn't be rated as high as the lonely plant rates it!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2011

My husband and I were very disappointed in this restaurant. We did not feel as if it should be one of the top picks in the lonely plant. The prices were not the cheap ones posted! They had went up quite a bit. We found the food was just so-so. Nothing to write home about. We found much better restaurants in the Muslim Quarters with better prices. They seemed very surprised that we were westerners!
