“A nice place to find in Xi'an”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

In the heart of the Muslim Quarter is the oldest mosque in China, originally built in 742 AD. The architecture combines that of typical mosques with Chinese elements.

The mosque is a little difficult to find, but anyone can direct you.

The grounds are very peaceful. We encountered a wedding party wile visiting (bride photo attached).

You are not allowed to enter the mosque unless you are Muslim, but you can look in and take photos.

The Muslim Quarter is in the center of Xi'an. Follow the street behind the Drum Tower (by Starbucks) for one block and you are there. It is a great place to stroll and has lots of food vendors, interesting shops, markets, restaurants, etc.

Well worth the visit if you are in Xi'an!

The largest practicing Mosque in China. Felt peaceful and tranquil and the whole area is worth a visit. Don't miss.

“Excellent blend of Muslim and Chinese”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

I found this place fascinating as I am very interested in both cultures and found the way they both came together intriguing. It was definitely Chinese but there were touches of Islamic tradition with some Arabic writing and the use of a pagoda as a minaret. It was cheap and there was a decent guide book in English

“Very different”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Considering we live in a Muslim country, it was very strange seeing this mosque. Based in the Muslim quarter of Xian, it is completely different to modern mosques. Nice, quiet and relaxing
