We stayed at the Sheraton Guilin as an unplanned stop on our trip in China (see review of Camellia Resort, Yangshuo, for the reason...) The Sheraton is bright and airy with a large atrium -- in fact so large that you wonder who did the cost/benefit analysis.
As an SPG gold member, we were upgraded from a standard room to a premium room. The views over the Li River were nice, and there were a few karst hills beyond to add to the tableau. The room itself was standard Western business, but the let-downs were the absence of BBC World on the TV, the relatively small size of the room, and the duvets, which were heavy cotton rather than the down one expects in a hotel of this calibre. The heating/AC did not work. OUr room temperature would not budge from 26 degrees Celsius despite the fan being on cool on full blast; I couldn't feel any cold air come out of any air vents.
The common parts are, according to my ex-hotel-industry husband, "dated" and "tired". I am not sure I would agree; I just think the decor is not very pleasing, though that might be a question of cultural relativism. (Husband disagrees and says it's just 70's...)
As in Beijing, we benefitted from the club benefits for an extra 30 GBP. This meant that breakfast was included (which was good, though some items on the buffet were cold when they should still have been hot), we had late checkout at 4pm (key when you're out all day and have an evening flight, which was the case), and then had the use of the lounge to relax in and to enjoy free nibbles and drinks until our late night flight. The lounge was not up to snuff --- it was not as inviting as others we have made use of, the food came out once and sat for two hours for the free happy hour, and we saw only one other person use the lounge (presumedly because it's not a superstar like the Regent Beijing's.)
Staff were all pleasant and smiley (and the lady in the lounge was most accommodating), and I think that counts for a lot.
In terms of value, I thought it was a bit expensive at GBP 130 per night, but after the night we endured in Yangshuo last night, we just wanted the certainty of a few basic comforts.
Personally, I would not spend any time in Guilin. It is a boring town and only really worth staying...
