“Great Service and Quality and Western Food! Location is "so-so"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

I stayed here with my family of five (for just one night in June), I would definitely like to stay here again.
On the plus side:
Service: We were greeted in the beautiful lobby by a woman in traditional garb who offered us tea and hot hand towels. The hotel staff were consistently friendly and were nice to our children.
Setting: Large windows to the back of the hotel lead to a beautiful garden and a scenic view of the Pearl River. The hotel is large, but has a Chinese flair and doesn't feel like a cookie cutter western style hotel. It is a bit away from the center of town, so it is tranquil.
Rooms: The beds were comfortable, shower pressure was good, and the rooms were clean as expected of a top notch hotel. A beautiful fruit arrangement awaited us in our rooms,
Food: I highly recommend the breakfast and dinner buffet. After spending the past couple of weeks eating Chinese food, my family welcomed the nice variety of offerings, including Western food. While large buffets have their limitations, the quality was good. They even had a chocolate fondue fountain for dessert. Yes please!
On the minus side: The location might be an issue if you aren't travelling with a tour guide because you can't walk to the city center (you can cab it, though). Also, it is pretty expensive.

Loved the hotel next to the Pearl river. The property was wonderful, but not much to do after coming back from work/meetings. Tried walking around outside the grounds and seems like a ghost town after dark. Not many people along the river, but it's fully lighted and there are small one person police stations so it makes walking at night alone safer. Hotel staff are very friendly, but have limited English language skills. Room included breakfast. Breakfast was very good with lots of options. Dinner at buffet was not worth the price. Strange, set up almost identical to breakfast, but the actual food tasted much worse. Did better at the overpriced Italian restaurant. Not many dining options available around the hotel. Pretty much ended up eating Italian every night.

Shangri La is probably my favorite hotel chain when i visit Asia. Luxury hotels, great attitude for the personnel and many other advantages.
This one was more Chinese than real Shangri La hotel.
Location was ok (not near the city center) but close enough to Canton Fair, rooms spacy and perfect design as always but the personnel was not to the real Shangri La standards (probably because of the language barrier, most of them had limited English knowledge).
Be conscious with the "mistaken" charges into your bill and the sometimes "enormous" deposit charges in your credit card which reduce your credit card limit for a long time. To me it took more than 3 weeks for them to release the reserved amount.

Room Tip: premier rooms were always the best option for me Even better with river view

The Shangri La,Guangzhou is a luxury hotel located in the Guangzhou's new commercial and business district, which providing spectacular views of the Pearl River and elegant landscaped gardens.

This 5 star property, situated bang opposite the Guangzhou International Convention Centre, home to the Canton fair, becomes a perfect residing spot for the entrepreneurs flocking from world wide to visit the fair.

The ammeneties and food service is excellent.
The language skills of most staff isnt up to the mark as it becomes extremely difficult at some point in time to communicate exactly what you want to them.

All in All.. Good Deal!

Great hotel situated bit far off from the city centre, but in convenient location close to the exhibition and business part of the city, some 40 mins from the Baiyun International airport.
Check-in was efficient, Horizon floor room was great, spacious bathroom. Small glitch at arrival as room smelt like someone was smoking before, although I requested non-smoking room. After complain I was moved to another one. Bathroom had a TV build in wall, so you can watch it while enjoying the bath, but it was impossible to tun as batteries seemed to be old. I called service few times , but it was never fixed. Lounge access included in Horizon Club room is convenient, but serving hours are not tailored for the business guests. I tried spa , which was amazing experience, both in terms of service and surroundings. Recommend it to every tired traveller.
Breakfast had a great choice of Asian food and little limited European cuisine, but none leaves hungry for sure.

The only major problem I had during my 5 days stay is that absolutely none one smiles in this place. All staff is like terracotta warriors, no exemptions. No expressions, nothing. I know this is common in Chinese culture, but if you want to attract foreign customers, really some smile on the face will not hurt.

We stayed in the hotel during the Christmas holiday in late Dec 2012, it was simply unforgettable. We received a special welcome gift while checking in as it was our 15th check-in with the hotel group for 2012, with membership privileges we were being upgraded to a junior suite which comes with club lounge access and late check out till 6pm, friendly staffs attending to our needs n requests in the lounge, Shangri'la always elegance and classy, their hospitality is top of the top, is this excellent hospitality which brings us back again and again.

Stayed one night at the Shangri-la Hotel Guangzhou after attending a count-down event on New Year Eve. Checked in after 2 am and left after breakfast.

Even for such a flying visit the hotel impressed with the usual Shangri-La comfort, elegance and hospitality. Room was spacious, bed was comfortable and washroom facilities were impeccable.

What made its mark was perhaps the high quality of its breakfast even by 5-star standard. First was the wide choice of fresh fruit juice, then there was the fabulous selection of Chinese and western dishes. I like my congee for breakfast, and was delighted to find that this was prepared to order with really fresh ingredients of a variety of meat and seafood. The prawn and crab congee I ordered was deliciously cooked to make a good start of the day.

Then I came across a beautiful presentation of roast beef. Even for someone who never takes roast beef for breakfast, the cut on the dish was irresistibly tempting. The taste of a slice of it confirmed that it was as tender, juicy and tasty as it could ever be. Full mark for it.

I finished off with smoke salmon and vege salad as the perfect ending of a sumptious and enjoyable breakfast.

Would like to return for a more relaxing stay to enjoy the rest of the hotel facilities and dining experience.
