“Customer service at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2011

The Shangri-la biggest asset is the customer handling skills and human touch points that guests experience Staff capacity to observe and interprete customers' needs is superb.

Outstanding breakfast service , selection and food quality. Get up from the table, leaving your room card behind. No problem you wont get out of the restaurant before being stopped by staff and your room card provided.

The hotel is isolated, however this hotel delivers 5 star service. Excellent place to stay, especially for foreigners visiting GZ for the first time.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

This is typically a work hotel due to the location far from downtown. There are no nearby facilities around the hotel.

Service levels are fantastic with great staff. I left an adaptor in my room and was able to have this sent back to me, very much appreciated. Free wifi for hotel guests is another great touch.

The dining options, there is the main restaurant that is more international/buffet or the Chinese restaurant once you get a bit tired of the buffet.

There is a shuttle to and from Guangzhou East train station that is useful also.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2011

I stayed two nights at the Guangzhou Shangri-La for business in December of 2011. From the lobby, to the customer service, to the restaurants and executive lounge, this place was 5 stars and then some.

The room was modern and well-equipped. The bathtub had a TV in the wall and a waterproof remote. The desk area had plenty of outlets and in various adapter sizes, a drawer full of office supplies, plenty of light and a comfortable chair. The bed was free of bed bugs and was comfortable. The whole room was spotless.

The free breakfast was one of the most impressive I have seen. Omelettes to order, the usual western food items (bacon, sausage, quiche, croissants, donuts, fruit, etc) and local items (Soup, stir-dry dishes, dim sum, etc) were all fantastic, hot and fresh. The set-up was enormous and delicious.

The service was top notch in the lounge and from housekeeping. I also ate one meal in the Thai restaurant in the hotel, which was on par with everything else. Delicious green curry, chicken satay, Sago Cake with coconut ice cream and more.

If I can stay in a Shangri La hotel, I will - every time. A similar review will be posted for the Hong Kong Island Shangri La, as I stayed 2 nights there after the two nights in Guangzhou.

It is tough to find a nicer hotel than this one.

My second visit here and again very satisfactory with good welcome and smart service all round. Room service prompt and efficient. Horizon Club service also good. Its hard to beat this hotel! Its rather interesting to see other strange reviews here about the hotel being out of town and close to exhbition centre - is this not obvious - and thats why the hotel is here!

Room Tip: High and facing the river is best

This hotel features the high quality and comfort one expects from the Shangri La brand. however, the rates for rooms and, especially, food and services is a bit high. The hotel itself is out of the way, unless you have business at the convention hall or in the immediate area, there is nothing else near the hotel. So unless you are doing business in the vacinity, you will feel cut off and will have to travel to anywhere else in the city. Nothing really in walking distance.
Would not stay here unless attending a convention or trade show.

I stay at Shangri-la hotels whenever I can throughout the world. The Guangzhou Shangri-la is a bit of a disappointment. It's location is only good for people going to a trade show or convention at the convention center. It is FAR from central Guanzhou and unless you are very adept at Chinese, it is NOT convenient. Inside, the rooms are spacious but they are not done with usual grace and elegance of other Shangri-la hotels. The styling is not even handed or consistent. It's as if it is trying to look expensive and refined, but comes off as over designed (almost cheap) by a suburban wanna be (example the triple tray ceiling in the guest rooms with tacky light fixture in the middle). It seems designed for the local market, not to world-class standards. In contrast the Shangri-la in Kowloon is a masterpiece of world-class sleek design, high end finishes, restrained elegance. The food here is good, but the inconvenient location, the slow wi-fi, and the design prevent it from getting a higher ranking from me, much as I love Shangri-la hotels.
