Stayed two nights in a newly-renovated room in the west building. Prior to arriving, I advise you to check you have the address of the right building, as they are a short walk apart, and if you arrive at the wrong building in the rainy season like we did, you and your luggage won't like the wet and squishy walk to the correct building, even if assisted by the concierge! Wet and unpleasant first experiences aside, I loved this hotel.
Rooms are cosy and well-appointed, with a beautiful marble bathroom with rain shower and drinking water tap. Bed is utterly heavenly-- having just come from remote parts of west China where the beds were like ironing boards, I could have slept forever in this bed! TV featured many international English language cable TV channels, plus other languages such as Japanese. In-room Internet was reliable.
The rooms in our category are all smoking rooms, though when we contacted the hotel prior to our arrival about this, they offered to air out the room prior to our arrival. I am sensitive to cigarette smoke but did not detect a wiff of smoke; perhaps we were just lucky. The more expensive room categories have non-smoking rooms.
Breakfast was great, with an egg/omelette station, ample western and Chinese options, plus yoghurt and fresh fruit. As others have noted, the hotel has a strange policy of one breakfast per room, so if travelling with a partner you will have to purchase an additional breakfast (around RMB50).
The hotel is within walking distance to a metro stop, which we found handy considering how congested the traffic was.
I love this hotel and will definitely stay here on my next trip to Guangzhou. Highly recommended.
