The Victory has two seperate buildings. Unfortunately the reception has difficulties in pointing out the correct route from the main building to the West wing, but at a second try the bellboy was helpful. The swimming pooli s in the main building like the bar, but nonetheless, the West wing is a pleasant building with a nice 'wintergarden' type of breakfast room.
Large room with a spacious balcony, well laid out bathroom, but no drawers were available. Nice 'goodies'.
Be careful with internet! Both of my laptops were deregulated after tuning in (Chinese censorship?), so I had to reset them once back. No problems with my smartphone, however. Probably one should use the free PC that is available in the room to overcome this problem.
Shamian Island is the nearly over-restored French/English concession with many restaurants, unfortunately most of them with a French cuisine. However, there are also some Cantonese restaurants with terraces. Around the corner is the cosiest Starbucks I have come across.
Don't forget to visit the 'gei's' at the other side of the bridge. Living China ilke 200 years ago.
