“Lovely room; uneven service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

Booked an Executive Double in the West Building. Room was clean, spacious, very nicely appointed. Had no view. Signs warned against opening windows because of mosquitoes.

Front desk staff was very helpful. Business center in East Building provides concierge services. Business center staff spoke limited English and could not help with anything but the most basic, routine questions. Chinese restaurant in East Building served good food, even accommodating our request for no MSG, but service was very slow. A simple noodle dish took 75 minutes and arrived only after repeated requests.

Hotel offers free shuttle to Pearl River Cruise and a few other places, which is nice.

Thai restaurant around the corner has reliably good food at reasonable prices.

Lots of family businesses in the neighborhood offer laundry services much less expensively than does the hotel.

This hotel is in a great location on the quiet and peaceful Shamian Island, but only a stones throw away from the dynamic market district. Ignore Lonely Planet's advice and take a look through the acres of Chinese herbs in Qing Ping Market. The seafood market is more confronting.

Value for money you can't beat the basic rooms. Unfortunately breakfast is average but you can walk to good dim sum around the corner.

Its an excellent place as the surroundings are perfect. A perfect place to jog in the morning and the river nearby. The people is the hotel staff still struggle with the english but they improved quite a lot from the last time. They have a good variety of food choices but mostly good if you are a non-vegetarian

Room Tip: The East side is better

Booked this via Agoda at significant discount which made it really good value. Room was very well appointed - felt like 4-5 star, very clean and everything worked just fine. Internet in the room works well for a change. The front desk staff very helpful and with good English.
The location is excellent and for tourists is an ideal choice. Shamian Island is great to walk around, then when you cross the canal, you are in the oldest part of Guangzhou (Old Canton?) which is also very interesting. Walk a couple more blocks and you are in a major shopping street (can't recall the name) where the locals go shop.

This was our second time staying at the Victory hotel. They are very nice and helpful with where to go and what to do in the area. It is located on beautiful Shamian Island which has everything you need. A big supermarket is only a short walk away and plenty of streets to meander around in. We stayed for 10 days at this hotel for our adoption. The hotel staff knew us by name and even remembered my daughters birthday. Our favorite staff member was Lily and she always greeted us with a smile. There is a nice little playroom for children inside the hotel. We have stayed here twice in the past 3 years. Internet was free when we stayed which is nice.

I would rate this like Best Western standard. The room looks aged and needed a face lift. The location however is very good. We walked to Guangzhou Restaurant. across the bridge from hotel, the best Chinese dim sum and cuisine ever, though everything in Chinese from menu to staff lingo. We walked also to Chen Ancestral home, great place to visit and Shangxia Ju pesdestrain street shoppping. Taxi to Beijing Lu is only 20 yuan and walking distance to the Nanyue Han mauseleum, a definite must. The map provided by hotel is dicey and we have to ask helpful friendly strangers frequently. Hotel only provide tea as beverage in room though offer us a daily cuppa of free latte at their cafe. Free English papers free on stands on room floor or at lobby. The hotel location , Shamian island is very scenic with grand colonial buildings, pretty treelined streets, like most of Guangzhou anyways, and nice view of Pearl river and skyline.

Room Tip: The Staff helped by providing an extra modem in room to boost spotty WiFi. Was very good after this...

If you get a good price online stay at this hotel, it is very average ..room, service, no frills , no gym to talk about, Internet is fine and it is very clean and quite. The best part is the location some of the most beautiful parks and streets in China, you feel more like Europe than in China, there are great cafes and stores, many little shops and very good location to the metro , I did not pay alot for the room so average prices and you get a average room .... but best transportation system to get you around very near the hotel. My trip was just site seeing and a place to sleep so I am happy to say this hotel fit my needs.
