“Good stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

Been there in the from 19th to 23rd may-13. We traveled in a group, a package from a tour operator in India. Although we were around 60 strong the check in was fast and pleasant. They exchange currency at the reception, because the team was 60 strong and every on wanted RMB for their USD they limited the exchange to $500 per person. Good breakfast, they have lot of Chinese dishes, we had an option of Indian dishes too as were a group. The dinner was also at the hotel but arranged by the tour operator, so cant comment.
The hotel is just opposite the bus station and the railway station just behind the bus station. Good service, friendly people, although language is a problem, the staff tried their best to keep our stay pleasant. Yes the beds are Hard, but i think the people there prefer it that way. There is a jogging track on top of the bus station, you can see people going for their morning walk.
Best place to stay if you are on a budget.

Room Tip: ask for rooms facing the bus station.

Booked this hotel through a travel agent in Hong Kong, as a major trade fair in town meant many hotels were full and of course all the prices were doubled.
OK it is easy to find and near the shopping mall, but apart from that there is not much to recommend this hotel. Although I booked a non-smoking room with a double bed, they tried to put us in a smoking, single bed room. Once that was sorted the faults became apparent. A major one is the damp - your clothes and belongings; even newspapers become damp very quickly and there is no heating in the room to dry them out. The next problem is the bed, which as other reviewers mention is hard; so hard in fact that we thought of purchasing a topping mattress from IKEA across the road (another advantage). If you are staying here for a while, this would be a requirement. Oh, and we also had bites (bugs?).
Other points are relatively minor but annoying : no WiFi; dirty carpets; thin walls; curt eviction from breakfast room at 10am.
To end on a positive note, the junior staff were polite and courteous.

My god where do I start from the smell to the Skanky Massage girls to the mould gowing off the roof of the room we were staying in.
If you are into these things and also like a rock hard bed then this is the right hotel for you.
maybe backpackers but do not try to stay there while there is one of the ever increasing tradeshows going on or it will cost you $300US.
I threntened the management if they did not move me and the mould on the ceiling gave me a disease then I would report them to the World Health organisation.

Room Tip: Don't stay here!! Anywhere else

ROOMS
Small, dirty, dingy, old school furnishings. Room smells musty and moldy.

LOCATION
5 minute walk from the GZ East Railway Station.
Many restaurant and shopping options outside.

PRICE / OVERALL VALUE
Price is ok, but make this your last choice if you are looking for hotels near the GZ East Railway Station.

Star Hotel is very conveniently located near the Guangzhou Railway station near to tianhe belu.
As per their tariff, rooms are very good in size and cleanliness. Staff is very cooperative, services are very good. I have some great golden memories associated with this hotel and because of that it will always remain my favorite hotel in town...:)..
Keep it up...!!!

I read many not very good comments about this hotel during the consideration process. However, in view of its proximity to the Guangzhou East Railway Station and metro station, and the attractive price, we finally made the decision to book it for this trip as we only need rooms for a night.

We found that the room hygiene is not as bad as people commented. Perhaps it's due to the fact that we booked it through the hotel Hong Kong head office which offers very good rate, priority free upgrade to business superior room and non-smoking floor. When the staff saw the hotel vouchers were issued by the Hong Kong head office, they appeared to handle our check-in in a more efficient manner.

However, I have to agree with other tripadvisors that the free breakfast is very basic and you may find it more enjoyable in KFC or MD. The gym room and the swimming pool are quite dirty that no one will use these facilities.

Room Tip: Ask for higher floor and book it through the Hong Kong head office.

It is a three star hotel, very close to Guangzhou East Railway station, about 4-5 minutes on foot. One can catch trains to Hong Kong, Shenzhen from this station. The Bus station, MRT station and a Big Mall is just at the opposite side of the hotel. The Mall has many good store and food stores. There is a McDonald nearby. The surrounding area is good. Taxis are easily available from the street in front of the hotel. Banks(including Bank Of China) are also nearby to exchange currency.

As for the hotel, it may be 3 star in Asian standard. It seems age is catching up and the hotel seems tired. It is about time they go for major refurbishing work. Hotel with such a nice location must be taken care of to attract more people. My experience was good with the hotel. Check-In was fast but needed security deposit. This can be taken care of by Credit Card. Room was big and with standard fixtures and at least my room was clean enough. No unpleasant odor was there. Free LAN was a real bonus, just plug it in and use. Bed is bit on the harder side in respect to western point of view, but from Asian point of view, it is OK. Bath room was Ok but tired. Never the less it was clean. Towels were clean and the supplied accessories(tooth brush, comb, sewing kits) were good. Breakfast……what shall I write,…..from Chinese point, may be Ok, but for others they need some additional food items. I could only eat the cereal, milk, tea, toast and the fruits. The breakfast hall is not at all impressive…..There is a penalty if some one waste food. This was some thing new for me. But I must say, it is good. I always see people waste food in buffet, which is vary bad.

A part from that, they have one bad practice. Occasionally suspicious ladies (heavily made up and scantily dressed) can be seen walking around. Even the Bell boys some times approaches hotel guests with unsocial offers, you know what I mean !!!! Hotel must stop that.……Over all this hotel is a good choice for short stay.

Room Tip: Room with the view of the Mall
