Took the subway all the way from the airport; it was only about half an hour's ride. The buildings are arranged on both sides of a grand central axis with the Canton Tower at one end and the CITIC Tower at the other end. By the river is the Opera House designed by Zaha Hadid, the Guangdong Museum, a children's library / centre and other fascinating modern architecture. The opera house was simply intriguing externally in terms of its forms ( "2 river stones") with public walkways around and in between the 2 structures but was disappointed to find that the construction workmanship was so poor when viewed close-up. In the river is the island which featured in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Asian Games. A pity that the underground / under-river pedestrian link to the Canton Tower was closed and we had to take the subway to the next station to get to the Canton Tower which offered amazing day and night views - go in the evening and wait for the lights to come on.
