“value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2011

despite several not so great reviews i decided to give the grand continental a chance solely because of its location and proximity to beijing lu and i was pleasantly surpried at the rate offered:298rmb on agoda
anyways i staryed there for 4 nights and would very well recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a value for money deal.the rooms are spacious and modern with all facilities andthe location is just perfect, few minutes walk to beijing lu. will definitely stay there again

Location is good. Close to Beijing Rd and Pearl River. Plenty of restaurants near by and shopping and subway.

Not quite the four star you would expect in North America, but fair for the price, if you don't care about customer service. When we got there, they had no record of our booking and could not confirm that we had already paid on line. What a way to ruin the start of a vaction! This was either an error on the hotels part or the booking agency RatesToGo.com. We spent almost an hour trying to figure out what was wrong and still did not reslove the problem. Luckily, they had a vacant room available. We had to put down a deposit of 800 RMB. A few days later, they finally recieved confirmation about our room but, only after numerous requests to have the staff look into it. The staff was always changing and spoke poor english and some of them only spoke Mandrin and no Cantonese. Don't rely on concierge service, she speaks only Mandrin and sleeps all day at her desk!

The room was spacious and clean. The bathroom smelled like a bag of onions every morning. The shower door did not close properly. The hot water runs out, due to small hot water tank. They had the hardest beds ever, like sleeping on a box spring. The safe was not screwed down, so you could run off with it if you wanted to. But overall, house keeping was good.

Confirm with hotel prior to arriving!

if your not choosy with rooms, this hotel is perfect for you. walking distance to beijing road, food and shopping is everywhere. location is great near a subway about 5 min walk. pearl river too is close if you know the way. gz basically needs to know mandarin. if not your going to have a hard time communicating with housekeeping, front desk and policemen if your going to ask for directions. but nontheless the hotel is perfect.

Great solution for location since it's close to Being Lu (good for my wife and the daughter)
Check-in really slow however, we do enjoy our meals at Four Season restaurant on the eighth floor, decent food and good price.

The best thing about this hotel is it's location, about 2 blocks from the Beijing Road Walking Street and about 3-4 blocks from the Pearl River. The 2-bed apartment we stayed in was spacious & comfortable, though the beds were harder than most we slept on around China. Free internet was appreciated. Reception was slow at check-in and check-out though, probably due to there being 36 floors and only 1 small reception desk staffed by about half a dozen stressed reception staff. Also, the lifts were inadequate to service all the rooms resulting in long waits whenever we needed to use them. Staff service levels were adequate at best, and not very welcoming compared to the other hotels we stayed in around China. Buffet breakfast on 3rd floor was bland.

I stayed with a colleague - our rooms were on the 26th floor - so quiet.
I found the beds very hard, but overcame the problem with some judicious placement of the overlarge pillows. The service at check in was terrible. 6 staff at the front desk, but only one who could check you in. We waited 50 minutes - second in line!
Check out was almost as painfull. Other than that, the hotel was good value for money, great location for shopping and excellent dining close by. The restaurant attached to the hotel was good - both in quality and value. Good coffee in the foyer, although the local beer went up 50% in price during our stay - it was during the Canton Fair though.
I would stay again, but strongly suggest something be done about the quality of the service.

Plus Points:
-Located in the bustling Beijing road area.
-Plenty of shopping, people watching and restaurants to keep you occupied
-Free shuttle Buses to and fro the Canton Fair
-Rooms are clean and modern
-Front Desk are more or less helpful & efficient

On the downside
-Beds are really really firm, it is literally like sleeping on a plank of wood
-No lights in the shower booth, so its get a bit dark when you shower
-Takes a while for water in the bathroom to heat up
