“Enjoyable stay and responsive staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel many times as it is not a long coach ride from HK to Guangzhou and we like to visit the older parts of Guangzhou, notably the Shamian Island and the Liwan district. Dongfang has a good ambience and relatively secluded setting. Three minutes' walk from the Yuexiu MTR station on Line 2, the hotel is very accessible. One MTR stop away is the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall, which is well worth the visit. One can also take MTR, change to line 1 and visit the Chan Clan's ancestry hall, which is the best well kept such hall in Guangzhou. "Hall" is an understatement because it is in fact a pretty big complex.

During my last stay, I arrived at 11 pm and checked into a room which turned out to have a problem with the central air-conditioning. When we called, they sorted out within 15 to 20 minutes and changed us to another room. Due to the tight booking that night, they actually upgraded us to a bigger room for the two-night stay.

Oh, they have free wifi throughout the hotel, including in your room, which makes it very convenient.

Room Tip: Block 1 is closer to the main reception. Block 2 is farther but then it is closer to the MTR stop...

Stayed for 2 days. Lovely outdoor pool. Fresh towels, big fluffy bathrobes, good porter, maid service, hot water. Taxis available at front porch but they can take advantage of you staying here so confirm rice before journey. Lovely setting. Shops nearby & fashion exhibion trade opposite , Marriott hotel next door. MacDonalds 3 min walk. Costa coffee sort of place over the road. Just a little out of the madness of sky scrapers.

Room Tip: The smell in city is terrible. But I think , that's with all city's.

Stayed in this hotel for just one day. I like hotels with such classic elegant style. A pleasure to meet with friends over tea table beside the pools with Gold fishes playing around. The room was ok. The air conditioning was efficient and the toilet accessories were apt. There were some English and other foreign language channels in the TV. As per my experience, most of the taxi drivers know about the location of this hotel. The location is also inside the main city area. The layout of the hotel can be a bit confusing at the beginning as some elevators do not operate at late hours but it's surely not a major issue. Check in can take a bit long during busy hours, but it's reasonable. I stayed in room 2621. Overall a nice experience.

Room Tip: Choose one not too far from the elevator.

I experienced atrocious service at the check-in counter- long wait and grouchy staff.

The room wasn't ready when I arrived, so we went out for lunch. I was issued a key after that and found that the room still wasn't ready. The poor housekeeping staff was petrified that the guest had arrived before the room was cleaned. The room was clean enough, but the room wasn't comfortable - too hard for my liking.

There was only one working lift for Wing 2 throughout the 3 days of my stay.

The breakfast was overpriced. There was limited variety and not satisfactory at all.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

Based on a recommendation of a local, I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights during a business visit to Guangzhou in June 2013. My review is based on my stay in a business room. The rooms and very spacious and clean with all modern facilities you can expect from a a 5 star hotel. The bathroom is huge with a tub separate from the shower with all amenities. The buffet breakfast is very varied with a wide range of Western and Chinese items. There is a well equipped Spa and Squash court, which I did not use, and a recommended pleasant pool set out in a well maintained garden (operates from 7 am to 10 pm).

The location of the hotel is close to the centre of the city and a Metro station is a 5 minute walk away. There are 2 big parks surrounding the hotel. The only negative issue from my point of view is that most staff are stiff in dealing with hotel patrons and many staff don't speak English well.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, upgrade to a high floor business room with a park view.

I have had two stays at this hotel, the first one was ok, the second one I got a room with a smelly bathroom, I couldnt even stand it. Breakfast is good though. Location is ok too. There is a Starbucks just around the corner which is a plus.
