“Great Location, Good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2011

Typical Westin hotel for good decoration, good service.

What makes this Westin stand out for me is the location for my business travel. It is in the TianHe area, near the Guangzhou East train station. A nice easy walk (or shuttle) from the train station. From the GZ/Canton airport - take subway to the GZ East train staion, or nearby station; or take a shuttle bus to the Citic Plaza building.

Good shopping nearby with the mall (ft. uniqlo) and ikea nearby.

Lot's of good places for food outside - mostly various Chinese (so many western fast food in the mall). Inside are good yet semi-pricey Chinese and Italian restaurants. The Italian rest. at the top floor provides a great view.

There is a small bar on the ground floor. Has potential, but entertainment is B-C level for talent. The occasional "professional" lady is waiting at the bar. Better to come with a group, have a nice drink, smoke a cuban, and relax with the music in the background. Maybe a good jazz night during the week and DJ during the weekend would be better than their current format...

Rooms are good size and nicely decorated in western style. (Not like the over the top, pseudo European style many Chinese hotels follow). The desk has all of the electrical needs for the traveling business person - no need to call down for a converter. Comfortable chair is great for long work nights! The desk lamp is nice decoration, but not very suitable due to low height, and non-adjustable.

Comfortable bed with plenty of reading light options. Lot's of big pillows and comfortable duvet - great nights rest.

Nice gym and indoor and outdoor swimming. Although the indoor pool was under maintenance. Concierge can provide good running map or cross the street and run around the park.

Price is reasonable for the level of Westin. I plan to stay here again next visit.

Room Tip: Ask for higher level floor, facing the park. Great views of the green space below Book a window...

Pity about the prostitutes in the bar in the evening. Makes it uncomfortable for a woman business traveler. Rooms were fine, location excellent.

The Westin has it all. A spacious room, a heavenly bed, suberb shower, a swimmingpool and a great location. The staff is efficient. But we missed some personal touches and we hate the high costs for WIFI.

The location is great. Shops, MRT, eateries and the evening street entertainment are all within walking distance. As is the east train station (trains to HKG). The hotel provides a shuttle to the station.

Prices can rise ridiculously during fairs. But during our stay the ok but still high price was worth it. If you do not want to eat out, enjoy the great food at the Prego Restaurant upstairs. Nice views. The water is overcharged (Euro 6 for 0,5 ltr.) so watch out. Breakfast is ok, but missed attention to quality and detail. How to get as many people as possible through the breakfast room in a short time must have been the main concern.

Concierge made some crucial mistakes with their info on the time you need to pass formalities when taking the train to Hong Kong. The gate can close 30 minutes before departure. Concierge adviced us to leave the hotel 40 minutes before departure. No stress, take 15 minutes extra! No shuttle available, no problem. The taxi will cost under 20 RMB.

Frontdesk was efficient and helped us greatly by changes our reservations. Flexible.
They gave us an upgrade to a room with a beautifull view (spg member).

Rooms are spacious (50 sq. mtr.), comfortable, have a large well designed bathroom and even have a ironing board. But no place to hang your laundry. You will need to get a bit creative for that. The odeur (humid) in the room was not great when we arrived. We took care of that by ourselves.

We liked the outdoor space. Not many hotels can offer an outdoor pool in Guangzhou.
The water is cold ('refreshing'), but there is also a heated indoor pool next to the outdoor pool with a nice and hot Jacuzzi. Pool staff is very friendly.

I was booked into this hotel for 10 days and it has been a very pleasant experience.

I will definitely come again if I visit Guangzhou in future. The staff spoke decent English and the concierge was always there to assist guests by writing the places they would like to go in Chinese for the convenience of taking a taxi.

I was however not satisfied with the bed. I booked a king sized bed but was given a combined twin sized bed instead. I noticed this on the third or fourth day as I was facing backache.

Because I am Platinum SPG, I was upgraded to an executive suite (two bathrooms, living room, dining area, work space, dressing area and bedroom). The room was huge and clean, but worn down. The carpet was stained, the drawers had chipped paint, etc. I had an amazing view of the city on two sides, and also appreciated the breakfast on the 39th floor. Definitely the nicest lounge breakfast with a ton of Western options.

The staff in the hotel were nice and helpful when they understood, but not everyone spoke English. I had a hard time getting basic questions answered.

The Westin is one of the best (if not the best) hotel in Guangzhou, mostly for a foreign taste (something that we all need from time to time while being in China, living or just visiting).
The italian restaurant in the last floor offers great views of Guangzhou, and really good food. The prices are, of course, as high as the floor where you're eating... But is something expected when being there. There's also a mexican restaurant, but at least the 3 times I was there, it was always empty.
The gym and the pool are nice, and you can enjoy some morning work out to start your day. If you go to the executive floors, you can have breakfast in the Executive Lounge. Which also offers a great view. The breakfast is not as vast as the one for the hotel in general, but still is OK.

The rooms are clean, big, and comfortable. I always staid in the Starwood members floor or Executive floors, but I think the Starwood members is just a detail and all the rooms in that price/category are the same.

They have a menu for late dinner or midnight snacks which you can have in your room. Something good if you come really late or, if visiting by travelling, your jet lag makes you hungry at 3 am.

The hotel is quite close to the Guangzhou Railway Station (one of them, there are 2), from where you can take the train to go to Hong Kong. There also offer a shuttle bus free of charge for the guests.

so guanzhou it was n " The Westin" was the property we'd shortlisted for our stay..I hav to admit that my hubby is really a good property lover n keeps exploring the luxurious properties..so we were here at this property for a week's time n really njoyed every bit of it..the hotel staff is very apt at conversing in 'English Language' unlike the other people in China..we being an SPG member got a premium room which overlooked the road/intersection..room size was really big n so was the reception..so if ur cmg from hongkong u'll be really surprised to find hotel with big sizes here unlike " hongkong'..the service here was too gud...moving over to food.thr were limited options to choose from as we were strict vegetarians so rather avoided eating at the hotel..very near to this hotel is a 7/11 store n McDonald's outlet which we tried once a while....Now the hotel was very clean with neat n clean lobby areas n the decor in the rooms was equally gud including the bathrooms..the hotel also gives a placard which carries names of the main shopping areas/business centres of the city which you can show to the taxi drivers who otherwise fail to understand english..yeah this is one of the major problems in china n getting a taxi is a real pain..so wenever we had to commute from the hotel we cud easily get taxis bcoz of hotel however while coming back we always faced problems..thrs this metro station also very near from the hotel may be some 5 mins walking distance n thr's this money exchange facility right opp to hotel( actually thrs this shopping mall opp to the hotel)..i wud suggest u shud get ur currency exchanged at the hotel itself as thr rates r equally gud n shud ask them to help u identify the original currency..yes as fake currency is quite rampant in the city..shopping areas r also not too far off from here..thrs's this very happening n beautiful pub in the hotel which plays live music on weekends..n we really enjoyed our time over thr..here one gets to see the best dressed happening people of the city..Overall we had a lovely time n vill go thr for sure againnnnn
