We loved staying here! The hotel is in a great location, walking distance to the Hermitage and many other sights. We did not dine here. The standard room was big and the concierge/front desk very helpful.

Spent four nights in a deluxe room I got through Hotels.com for $273 a night (plus taxes). In fact, it was the deluxe room (#303) you can see on the PP website. Location is excellent, the bed was nice and comfy, and I slept just fine despite having a room facing the street. Some of the staff were more friendly than others, but everyone was good at his or her job. The night manager never cracked a smile but bent over backwards to help me print out an important document late at night. My room was kept spotless. My wakeup call was right on time. With service that great you can just grin into the mirror whenever you need a smile. Don't bother with the wifi in the lobby - you can get broadband in your room for free just by plugging your laptop into the Ethernet cord by the TV. You only get charged if you use the WebTV interface. What a deal! My only criticisms: I'm not sure the A/C did anything; fortunately I didn't need it during my stay. Also, the breakfast buffet was a little disappointing to this practicing meatatarian. Perhaps the PP is closer to 3.5 stars than it is to 4 stars, but I'm still glad I stayed there. All in all, I would definitely recommend the Petro Palace Hotel to any traveler. I will definitely stay there again when next I get to visit Saint Petersburg.

My wife and I stayed here for four nights in the first week of June.
This is a peak period in St Petersburg and one must book well in advance to find the best deals. With about two months notice, we were looking for a central location, English-speaking staff available
24/7, and adequate furnishings and amenities. After many searches through Trip Advisor, we selected the Petro Palace. Based on some earlier reviews, we selected a premium room at roughly 400 euros per night.
We were very pleased with the room -- it was quite large, had a nice sofa and chair and plenty of closet and drawer space. The bathroom was quite large as well. The room was quiet and the AC was quite powerful. Drapes were plenty thick; no problems with the 24 hour sunlight. The location is excellent; most major sights are within 10-15 minute walk.
The hotel does a good job on the basics: check-in, check-out, baggage
handling, keeping the room clean. Where it falls down is service. The
doorman rarely helped with the door; once he nearly knocked us over as he was rushing through answering his cellphone. At breakfast the help preferred to stand around and look bored. We had to point in an exagerrated manner at empty trays to get the help to perform the simple task of going back to the kitchen to fill them. The breakfast itself is good value at 18 euros for a full range of food items; other hotels in this part of town charge twice as much (we shopped around after the first day because the service was so bad).
We ordinarily prefer boutique hotels, but we would certainly consider
staying at the Petro Palace again if we ever return to St Petersburg.

Based on the number of "5" ratings awarded this hotel by others I was expecting more than the hotel delivered. This is a standard tourist class hotel. My room was clean (the bathroom especially) but unexceptional in size or decor. The lobby likewise was functional but nothing special. I enjoyed the breakfast but completely agree with previous reviewers who took exception to the rather depressing room it is served in (the "Breakfast Hall") and the high-tech music that plays there continuously. What is exceptional about this hotel is its fabulous location, within walking distance of the Hermitage and other major sites and a block or so off Nevsky Prospect. I was also very happy that the airport pickup arranged by the hotel the same day as my flight went off smoothly despite my delayed arrival. I stayed at Petro Palace because there were few alternatives when I booked. I would stay again in a pinch, but would look for something more uplifting next time. I thought the price I paid ($430/night for a three night stay, through Orbitz) was high for the value.
