This is good hotel and a nice place to stay for visiting St Petersburg. Firstly it is within easy walking distance of all the main sites, avoiding the need to take taxis, buses or the metro. Nevsky Propsect is 5 minutes walk as is St Isaacs Cathedral. The Hermitage, Winter Palace and River Neva is about 10 minutes, and the Church on the Spilled Blood 15 minutes. Allow 15-20 minutes for the St Peter and St Paul Fortress on the other side of the Neva.
We had a Deluxe room which was clean, comfortable and well equipped. The decor was a little old fashioned, but the room was large and had a high ceiling. The bathroom was modern and well equipped. The buffet breakfast is fine with a plentiful choice and the Hotel Restaurant Baron serves excellent food with substantial helpings (particularly the starters). Service at reception and in the bars and restaurants was generally polite and efficient, if sometimes a little slow and "unsmiling". The Sky Bar is a good place to relax in the late evening and watch the "white nights" as we did; try the Cranberry and Bilberry juice with vodka!
We also booked a car from the hotel to meet us at the airport and return us there to fly home. This service was fast and efficient, we were met easily just outside of the customs hall, and the car arrived 10 minutes early for the return trip. Incidentally don't believe the horror stories of long queues at passport control to have Visas checked on entry. We were in the taxi going to the hotel having cleared passport/visa control and collected our bags 20 minutes after landing. In my experience this is about three times faster than arriving at Manchester Airport in the UK!
We had a great trip and would recomment the Petro Palace. On the day we arrived it was Russia Day, so the river bank and Palace Square was crammed until late with revellers and entertainers, but all good humoured and not a hint of trouble. St Petersburg is a great city, easy to get around with plenty of English signs at the main attractions.Don't expect it to be like western Europe, but it certainly isn't as strange and scary as some of the Guidebooks like to make you believe. Finally a special mention to British Airways, totally punctual on both arrival and departure.
