If you want something nice stay at the grand hotel Europe!!! I lived here for 10 months and , after training the maid and some others got decent service. True, it is of Neo-Stalinist architecture and ammenities but most of the people we helpful and it was clean, of course this was in 1994!!!!!!

This is probably the worst hotel I've ever stayed in, especially given that it wasn't exactly cheap ($130 a night). The rooms were dirty and covered in dead insects. The bathroom was a joke, the bath didn't just have cracks in it, it had massive gapping holes in the enamel that were black with dirt. The hot water took 15 minutes on full to become vaguely tepid. Beds were old and very uncomfortable. Mosquitos buzzed in your ear all night. Breakfast was grey and there was nothing on this earth that would have tempted me to eat it.

Do anything you can not to stay in this hotel. Find a shop doorway and snuggle up there. You'll be more comfortable and less likely to get ripped off.

Ever used time machine? No? Then, you have a great chance to see truly sovietical service, unfriendly staff and [-] roomservice.
Please, don't go to the breakfast - you are under risk of food poisoning!
Please bring your own sheets and air-conditioner, following by antimoscito repellent (even in winter time).
Lobby bar - gosh, dirty glasses, aged sandwiches and fake whiskey!

We were a group of 30 here. Rooms all hot! Ours was about 90 degrees. Open windows doesn't help. Mosquitos are a big problem. Staff is no help. Schedule for Marinsky Theatre? no. Ticket for Hermitage? no. A local bar/restuarant to watch world cup? no. Laundry in hotel? no. Outside? no. How about a stamp for this postcard? no. Bartender was rude enough to allow the hookers to turn up the nightly soaps above our head because we were talking too loud! ...every night! Breakfast was okay. At the end of the week, others from the group stayed in others hotels nicer, with ac and for the same price! Also, hard to find and not as close to the center as would like to be. We won't stay here again.

I stayed there for 6 days during an international conference. The room is small. Furnitures are old and outfashioned. The only tv-channel in English is BBC World, others are all in Russian. You have to ask the receptionist for your shampoo everyday. Bad English services in the bar sometimes (by the way, you may find two or three hookers hanging in the bar every night. sometimes they stopped you in the lounge for a deal). I killed couple of mosquitos almost everry late night. I am not saying this is a terrible hotel, but there are some real problems and you got to be prepared.

My wife and I stayed at the Russ Hotel and were very pleased with the room and staff. The breakfast, while a little different for an American, was outstanding.
The two gift shops in the hotel had bargains we found no where else on our trip.
Our room was clean and made up each day while we toured around St. P.
We plan to stay there on our next trip.
