4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

Different to the Hermitage less grand but still very interesting displays of ethnic crafts alongside the huge historical paintings.

“Good contrast to the Hermitage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

The Hermitage is brilliant but not very Russian. This in contrast is just Russian art so arguably tells you more about the country than the Hermitage. The audio guide adds to the enjoyment enormously.

“The most important museum to see in the city for art lovers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

The museum is nicely located in the surrounding of the other monuments. My advice is to go to the museum from the very first hour since it is opened. The old building still has problems with ventilation and after the night the air is better inside. You need any way to spend there at least two hours just to walk around the museum. You will be tired, especially if you will pay attention to the art and spend there 3-4 hours. The park behind the museum is connected to the Summer Park - another attraction. It is rather good, especially after recent restorations. It may be very nice to walk through these parks after the museum. Unfortunately it is the advise only to summer time visitors - winter time in SPb the light day is very short.

“Don't miss this”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

This museum houses Russian artists from about the 15th century to the end of the 20th/beginning of the 21st. Other than Chagall and Kandinsky, these are artists we do not see in the West.
