“Not bad for a "soviet" hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago NEW

This hotel is not of any western chain, which means it's "genuinely local". It's very typical for many post-soviet Russian organizations to have significant level of inconsistency, nearly grumpy attitude of the staff and other multiple shortcomings in many details, that in the West are taken for granted.

So, having said all that, this particular property is actually not bad at all in its category. Good location - right next to a shopping center and a metro station, short ride away from the heart of the city. Very clean room, complimentary bottled water, soft bed, nice view, windows can be opened, rich breakfast, unusually friendly breakfast staff, plenty of lighting in the room. Very affordable, especially given the Russian ruble rate as of late 2014.

On the negative - and again, all this is common in any of the "soviet" hotels: not very friendly front desk staff, skimpy towels, very rough.. ahem.. toilet tissue, no tea/coffee making facilities, aging prostitutes hanging out with older guys in the lobby at night, the only accepted style of payment is full prepayment on the check-in, absence of the mini-bar, unpleasant tap water, crappy cardboard-like breakfast sausage.

TIPS:
1. Hotels of that sort usually have many different grades of rooms, starting as low as something that would be considered a 1-star hotel by westerners. Therefore, do NOT book a standard room, go for 1-2 levels higher in order to get something comparable to an average western hotel.

2. In cold season, likely the room will be overheated. To reduce the heat, don't try messing with the climate control panel on the wall. Instead, locate heat regulation knob on the radiator panel and turn it to the lower numbers on its dial.

Overall recommendation: if western style consistency is indispensable for your expectations from a hotel - then you would not be happy with your stay here and should aim exclusively at reputable Western chain hotels. If you are more relaxed - this hotel is a great option, especially in the value-price ratio.

Room Tip: Definitely avoid lowest grades of various room standards, go for at least Comfort level.

The hotel is located at the end of the Nevski Prospekt, The rooms facing the river show a wonderful view which compensates the limitations of the hotel itself, a bit out-dated and boring. I'd recommend it if you're on a budget (it is the typical hotel for groups).

You feel soviet style straight at reception when ladies ask you to fill in the form with your personal data. Then you go to the room: I haven't seen such a basic room since long time ago. Never thought that this can be possible in the centre of St.Petersburg! The furniture is very basic, the bed is small and the TV is from 90s (not LCD). Next morning I waited for a lift 4 min and when it arrived it was full. What was good my room was at 4th floor so I used a stairs. I needed to leave my luggage at hotel storage room. The man asked me politely to feel free to put my luggage on the shelf. What a service! Not saying that you are supposed not to be allowed to enter the storage room due to security reasons.
Breakfast - good selection but the quality is second-rate.
The hotel is not recommended. Would never chose if not the conference which took place in this hotel.

The rooms aren't the most charming, but mine was clean. I wouldn't expect the A/C to work 100%, but the staff happily sent a fan up, which did the job well enough. I was happy to be a few metro stops from the center for a little peace and quiet, and you can stock up on pretty much anything at the shopping mall next door, which is a perk you can't find downtown.

The breakfast was fine, and I never had any problems with the Wifi. The 24-hour bar & grill on the top floor was a lifesaver; a nice place to wind down before going to bed, with lovely views of the Neva. The laundry service was expensive, and we had a bit of back-and-forth in my not excellent Russian trying to find a lost skirt, but laundry delivered it a few hours later with no harm done.

We were at the Moscow Hotel as part of a group… And our group was only one of many, many groups at the hotel - all fighting for their daily food at the cavernous hall with music and noise.
The hotel has a very good location with metro station and 24-hour supermarket practically in the building. The rooms are nothing special.

Room Tip: Hard to tell… we were on the second floor, it worked out alright.

This is a very large hotel with good location. The room is very basic and clean. Long corridors to walk. Breakfast was served in a big hall with lots of guests. Breakfast was ok, but not fantastic. Reception was cool and business like, no smiles.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over the river.

I stayed at the Moscow Hotel as part of a group trip organized by Explore UK. I would describe the room as barracks. It had a small narrow soft bed with scratchy threadbare towels (one large, one small) and an old fashioned hair dryer. I had booked a single but had the pleasure of sharing my accommodations with silver fish in the bathroom. Breakfast was included - if you could get past the thousands of tourists that filled the breakfast room each morning. The door was secured with a flimsy old fashioned lock that did not inspire confidence.

Room Tip: Find somewhere else to stay!
