“Enchanting.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

It was sheer luck that we managed to get a room at this Vintage hotel during the days of midnight sun.
just as the name suggests, it looked like the grand old lady of St.Petersburg.
The staffs were quite efficient and helpful. Nce and easy checkin, early in the morning, about 6am, after a pleasant night trip on the train from Moscow.
Rested a bit in the well appointed and comfortable room and after a freshup headed for breakfast.
Trip to famous sight seeing spots like the Ekaterina palaces and the river was simply magical.
Was happy to visit a historic mosque built in Turqish architecture. Revived as a Religious and Cultural centre after Glasnost, but needs more support to bring it back to its old glory.
The boat ride was exciting while returning to the hotel.
Went shopping to the nearest Market and amazed at the richness of cultural and economical activities.
Had dinner by a roadside cafe, watching the crowds of tourists jostling around, enjoying the long, lloonnnggg summer day. It was 10pm, by the time we returned to the Hotel and felt like it was early afternoon. No tiredness, no fatigue, what a miracle from the hands of the Almighty.
Freshened up and hit the road again at 11 pm. It is too early to retire during the days of the midnight sun.
By the time we returned to the Hotel it was

Room Tip: Dont choose a room with view of the road, it is too busy.

The hotel is represented as VIP and luxurious but due to its tear and wear it looks as used hardly. We have booked the top floor room with a view to silent part of the building and balcony. When we arrived the administration decided (unilaterally) to move us to other room with a view to noisy Nevsky prospect and without a balcony but with stupid posh interior in "XVIII century Feldmarshal's"-style.
After a short scandal (because we wanted exactly the booked room taking into account the fact that our room was booked in advance) - we were moved to our room - but the room was not prepared. What was interesting - there were the clothes and bags of other guests. It was really crazy - because they have just opened the door to the room with third's clothes and bags.... After we noticed that the room is still occupied the staff proposed us to wait in the corridor before the room will be cleaned...... Please do not forget that the hotel is 5 Star!!!!
Nevertheless - after our strange check in was finished - we really enjoyed the perfect view from the balcony. If possible - you must book the top floor rooms only because the view is unbelievable - and you can take pictures with a very nice background just from the hotel roof. It was really great.
The quality of sleep was also really good. And the location of the hotel makes sense because everything is near and you may walk right and left from the hotel to see the main sightseeings of this city.
The breakfast was reach but....it could be better. However it is much better than standard breakfast in a usual European hotel.
So the hotel is not bad in general and could be recommended for stay but - please compare prices and interesting offers with other St.Pete hotels - maybe you will find something better.
P.S.: Would like to underline - the roof top floor rooms - are.... EXTREMELY NICE!
So you may book the roof rooms with balcony and.... have a breakfast and other facilities nearby - thanks God there is everything close to the hotel - city cafes, restaurants, shops etc. with relatively good quality and relatively safe. So you will save some money and will be totally happy with your stay in St.Pete.
Enjoy!

Grand hotel Europe is located in the heart of the historic center of St. Petersburg. The building itself is simply breathtaking, magnificent architecture. You will be welcome by a professional team. If you have the opportunity to spend an hour sitting comfortably in front of the fireplace in the mezzanine, you will cherish this moment for a long time.

The surprise might come from the rooms, when pushing the door you feel attacked by the carpet, the wallpaper, and the curtains (the bathroom could be a second shock), then be sure you are not the only one.

If you are not a breakfast person or if you have spent too much time in hotels, these are not good reasons to miss the breakfast. First, the location is superb, it might have been a church before. Then the available choice and variety of food goes far beyond expectations.

Regarding the price, I enjoyed corporate rates and cannot comment on value for money. But I will definitely go back to the Orient Express.

This is the first time I stay in an OE hotel. I expect highly and think it is comparable to a St Regis or Four Seasons but Grand Hotel Europe somewhat fell short.

The service is good. Check-in and check-out were done efficiently. Breakfast is big with many choices, and the food quality is also excellent. Unfortunately the superior room I had is very small. Although well maintained, for the money I paid I would like to have a much large 5-star room.

The hotel itself is good and up to its 5-star standard. However I did not find anything 'wow' to write home about. I'd only return to the hotel when I can afford a suite here to enjoy the real luxury.

Not only is the dining room gorgeous to look at, with Art Nouveau overtones and a pleasure to sit in, with lovely lady playing a grand piano (yes, during breakfast) the buffet and choice of food is the best I have experienced so far in more than 40 years of travelling. Caviar, smoked salmon, herrings, fresh fruit, fabulous pancakes whisked up before your eyes, a myriad of cheeses and cold meats, 30 different teas to choose from beneath a gleaming silver samovar, superb dark and rich coffee and, if you really can't resist, it can all be washed down with excellent champagne.

Room Tip: Most hotels, like department stores and museums, are overheated. Therefore a room that has windows...

If you're looking for a trip back in time, you should go there for sure. Very nice Hotel with special "d'antan" atmosphere. Service top level, breakfast superb, marvelous smell in all the Hotel rooms and halls, style evrywhere...you really feel back to old fashion time. In winter season rate is also really interesting, in spring and summer check before because it's a 5 stars hotel and rate is at that level

There is usually nothing to say about such a high level service - everything is at the best. At the Grand Hotel Europe you will even find a menu in your room which helps you choose the perfect pillow for your rest. But something is above perfection, and this is breakfast. My suggestion is to choose this hotel and wake up early in the morning just to spend time sitting at the breakfast table and enjoying the magnificent buffet while listening to a woman playing the harp for you.
