I can't say enough about this hotel. First, I have to start by saying I am incredibly picky and easily disappointed by hotels. This is a beautiful gem of a hotel with a lot of character and so much history. It is not a glamorous mega hotel or a Ritz, but it is a charming establishment with charming rooms and wonderful service. We had booked a room through and on-line service which took our money, cashed it, but failed to actually book the room with the hotel. We arrived excited to find out that they had no idea who we were and no room for us. Given that we had gone through an external vendor, it really was not their problem and could have just had us sort it out ourselves. But they did everything they could to sort out the issue. We had booked a basic room and they were completely sold out...so they accommodated us by upgrading our room free of charge. They were absolutely wonderful.
The rooms are not huge or glamorous, but charming and we had a wonderful view overlooking the plaza. Great location and if you can book a private tour of the Hermitage through the Astoria, do it! It's about the same price as one of the group tours and exponentially better. We found out that our tour guide had given tours to Elton John, Bill Clinton and the Rolling Stones!
I have fond memories of this hotel and would love to go back. Oh and amazing massages at the spa.
